In Oahu, I&#8217;ve hung out on its famous North Shore, discovered some of my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/kailua-beach\"><strong>beaches<\/strong><\/a>, leaned into the vegan foodie life and DJ&#8217;d in some of its best nightclubs. In Kauai, I&#8217;ve enjoyed countless lazy drives around the island, visited my favorite beaches and got engaged and married on the north side. Kauai&#8217;s accommodations &#8211; whether you&#8217;re going more boutique or for a larger resort &#8211; seem to lean in to the more authentic, laid back, beautiful Hawaiian vibe. Even though there are less options on Kauai, you&#8217;ll find great spots to stay throughout the island&#8217;s small towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-a-car-rental-necessary\">Is a car rental necessary?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re staying in the Honolulu area, the public transportation and ride shares do make it easier to get away without a car rental. However, I urge you to make room in your budget for a car rental. Get out of Honolulu to experience the nature, beaches and smaller towns throughout the rest of the island. Make your drive around the island a part of the daily experience you look forward to. Just driving along the K\u016bhi\u014d Highway will give you views of stunning beaches, waterfalls and abundant tropical foliage that you&#8217;ll never forget!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-activities\">Activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Both islands offer a wealth of activities, but the experiences are quite different. When comparing the two, it again comes down to what you&#8217;re looking to get out of your visit. You can even do a lot of free activities in Hawaii &#8211; these are some of our favorite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/things-to-do-in-kauai-for-free\/\">free things to do when visiting Kauai<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-snorkeling\">Snorkeling<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawaii is known for its snorkeling.  It&#8217;s surrounded by marine areas that are protected, and locals who passionately advocate for them.  Hawaii is home to 85% of the coral reefs in the US! The typical spots can tend to get busy, so keep your goggles with you, and head to the water when you see a safe spot that looks good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some popular Oahu snorkeling spots are :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hanauma Bay is a stunning reef &#8211; but does sell out daily. <a href=\"https:\/\/hanaumabaystatepark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Advanced reservations are required<\/a>, OR <a href=\"http:\/\/vi.me\/dKT0q\">book a t<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/vi.me\/dKT0q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">our<\/a> to ensure your spot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/e7zyoRcuh4ZNEtBU7\">Shark&#8217;s Cov<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/e7zyoRcuh4ZNEtBU7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">e<\/a> &#8211; Shark&#8217;s Cove is absolutely worth it for snorkeling. It&#8217;s a unique spot with a community driven beach, great sunsets and a protected reef. Only plan this for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/hawaii-in-june\/\"><strong>summer<\/strong><\/a> months as the winter swells make it too dangerous.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ko Olina &#8211; There are some excellent spots off of the Leeward coast, and it&#8217;s fun to take <a href=\"http:\/\/vi.me\/x2kyy\">a boat tour to experience them<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some popular Kauai snorkeling spots are :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Na Pali Coast (accessible by boat only) because of its clear waters, stunning views and variety of marine life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/ByoqTR2tQykdDmoHA\">Poipu Beach Par<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/ByoqTR2tQykdDmoHA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">k<\/a> because of its protected bay and calm waters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/ebHwXcPcrj28fCdC8\">Anini Bea<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/ebHwXcPcrj28fCdC8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ch<\/a> because of its large reef and calm clear waters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oahu-vs-kauai-luaus\">Oahu vs Kauai : Luaus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll be able to find excellent luaus in Oahu and Kauai. Look for locally owned so that you can have the most authentic experience, and to support the people who live there. It&#8217;s fun to schedule your luau experience for the first or last night of your trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nightlife\">Nightlife<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Oahu has the best nightlife between the two islands, hands down. Honolulu is a vibrant city that has a wonderful variety of nightlife experiences. Kauai is a sleepier island and while you may find the occasional bar open later, it&#8217;s just not something people visit the island for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a DJ, I&#8217;ve played some of my favorite nights of my career in Honolulu. For dance music, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/centeredpresents.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/centeredpresents.com\/\">entered Hawaii<\/a>&#8216;s revolving list of events, or Honolulu&#8217;s newest spot, <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/FnS88UULfGwJ8Wqu7\">The District<\/a>. For bars, pop around Waikiki and you&#8217;ll find an assortment of spots with fun music, energy and drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shopping\">Shopping<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Oahu and Kauai offer visitors who love to shop different experiences. In Honolulu, there are a handful of large malls like the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/jX1Wr43egzwKSaZv6\">Ala Moana Cente<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/jX1Wr43egzwKSaZv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">r<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/sfSr1Fv7v1zTm1Lx8\">Royal Hawaiian Cente<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/sfSr1Fv7v1zTm1Lx8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">r<\/a>. You&#8217;ll find big name stores and designer brands. If you forgot to pack something, you can easily find it.  Smaller towns are often filled with local shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kauai&#8217;s shopping is almost entirely local. Stroll through unique shops featuring local artisans and goodies in all of the major towns. We love to stop and stroll for awhile as we pass through.  <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/p2mpK3wYBCFvnpLA7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kapaa Town<\/a> is one of our favorite places to window shop or purchase souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-history-amp-cultural-experiences\">History &amp; Cultural Experiences<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If there&#8217;s one thing that I recommend to everyone who asks my advice about visiting Hawaii &#8211; it&#8217;s to lean into Hawaii&#8217;s culture as much as you can. It gets very busy and is full of tourists, but is fun for people watching and unbeatable views of Honolulu and Diamond Head.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/kaimana-beach\/\"><strong>Kaimana Beach<\/strong><\/a> is a wonderful Waikiki Beach that has way less crowds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/VNfSCSvp2NbnvUFY6\">Lanikai Beac<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/VNfSCSvp2NbnvUFY6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">h<\/a> is known for it&#8217;s soft white sand, turquoise waters and stunning views of the Mokulua Islands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/mhP5BK8Xx1BUZ5FQA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Waialua Beach<\/a> is less crowded and has beautiful views.  Be sure to look for signs posted as there can be strong currents and rip tides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/kailua-beach\/\"><strong>Kailua Beach<\/strong><\/a> is a local and visitor favorite.  At 2.5 miles long, it&#8217;s a wonderful beach for a morning walk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While Oahu&#8217;s beaches may be more swimmable, that&#8217;s not to say that Kauai&#8217;s beaches won&#8217;t have your jaw dropped. With a protected swimming area, a large lawn full of picnic tables and a beach town background, it&#8217;s a fun spot to spend an afternoon, but gets crowded.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LEvzntbF9Bh73bPP7\">Kalapaki Beac<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LEvzntbF9Bh73bPP7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">h<\/a> is a vibe with swimmable waters, volleyball, and bodysurfing with the right ocean conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LfkefPG9xUwdooML6\">Ke&#8217;e Bea<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LfkefPG9xUwdooML6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ch<\/a> for swimming, snorkeling and incredible views of the beginning of the Na Pali Coast. Visiting has a fee and requires advanced reservations with daily visitor limits &#8211; it&#8217;s worth it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hiking\">Hiking<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Oahu and Kauai both have hundreds of hikes with breathtaking scenery, from lush valleys and rugged cliffs to panoramic ocean views. Trails like Diamond Head provide iconic panoramas of Waikiki, while less-traveled paths, like those in the Ko&#8217;olau Mountains take you deep into tropical rainforests. Hikes in Oahu get more crowded than in Kauai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiking on Kauai immerses you in untouched, jaw-dropping landscapes. The island&#8217;s rugged cliffs and untouched valleys make you feel like you&#8217;ve stepped into something you&#8217;d see in a movie.  With so much of the island inaccessible by road, hiking is a fantastic way to see the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-whale-watching\">Whale Watching<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Hawaii is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Whales come to Hawaii after summer ends in Alaska. From December to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekailife.com\/hawaii-in-march\/\">March<\/a>, they travel to Hawaii\u2019s warm waters to mate, give birth, and nurse their calves. Whether you\u2019re grabbing poke from a local market or indulging in a local favorite from a North Shore food truck, Oahu is a foodie&#8217;s paradise. be sure to arrive early as no reservations are accepted and lines get long.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/DwJwM685Tn7GMW4D8\">Marugame Udo<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/DwJwM685Tn7GMW4D8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">n<\/a> &#8211; you&#8217;ll recognize this spot by the huge line that wraps around the block.  It&#8217;s worth it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On Kauai, expect more intimate and local spots. It certainly doesn&#8217;t offer the variety that Oahu does and isn\u2019t well-known for its food culture, but has some fantastic locally owned and operated choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of my family&#8217;s favorite Kauai restaurants are :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/TpPj6fBBcCSti7wK9\">The Hanalei Dolphin Restauran<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/TpPj6fBBcCSti7wK9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">t<\/a> &#8211; this is our special place to return to each time we visit.  It&#8217;s where we ate with our family after we eloped!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/3tAGSSQ9egpBMLEm9\">Puka D<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/3tAGSSQ9egpBMLEm9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">og<\/a> &#8211; a really fun spot to grab the best hot dog of your life. The vegan dogs are the best I&#8217;ve ever had!  Don&#8217;t sleep on their drool-worthy homemade sauces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/LCyM45fyceLj1ZaV9\">Keoki&#8217;s Paradise<\/a> &#8211; the food is just as delicious as the indoor gardens and waterfalls are stunning.  It&#8217;s become a tradition for us to visit here each visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-weather\">Weather<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find all of the Hawaiian islands to have pleasant weather throughout the year. When it comes to Oahu vs Kauai, both islands see more frequent precipitation on the northern windward sides. The rain contributes to its lush landscapes and why it&#8217;s known as &#8220;The Garden Isle&#8221;, but it&#8217;s worth keeping in mind if you&#8217;re planning outdoor activities. The showers tend to be pretty quick, though so don&#8217;t let it stop you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-safety\">Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Oahu and Kauai are considered very safe destinations.  Oahu has a slightly higher rate of petty crime in tourist-heavy areas like Waikiki, but it&#8217;s still minimal compared to other destinations. Kauai feels even safer due to its quieter nature and smaller population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something to keep in mind is that Kauai has less services available since it&#8217;s more quaint. On one trip, my husband accidentally closed our keys in our rental car trunk and it took over 7 hours to get a locksmith out. It was a good reminder of the island&#8217;s limited services!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural disasters, while rare, are worth noting. Hurricanes and tsunamis don&#8217;t happen often, but can impact both islands. Kauai experiences flooding from time to time and it can impact roads, closing off sections of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-oahu-highlights\">Oahu Highlights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oahu offers an exciting mix of adventure, history, and city life, making it a great island for all kinds of travelers. After dinner, you&#8217;re treated to an incredible show featuring hula, drum, knife and fire dances.
