Yes! Uber is available in Puerto Rico, and if you’re staying in San Juan or nearby areas, you’ll have no trouble getting a ride. It’s one of the easiest ways to get around – whether you’re heading to Old San Juan for dinner, catching a ride from the airport, or making your way to the beach.

Puerto Rico is one of my absolute favorite places in the world to visit. I travel to the island as often as I can and love to explore all over the island. One of my favorite things about Puerto Rico is how warm and welcoming the people are, and my Uber experiences have been no different.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about using Uber in Puerto Rico – from pricing and availability to safety, airport pickups, and transportation alternatives, and more.

Uber is often my go-to for getting around San Juan. It’s easy, reliable, and way more affordable than most other transportation options (which we’ll get into later!).

Almost every ride I’ve taken has felt like a mini guided tour, with friendly drivers pointing out landmarks and giving me local tips along the way.

How to Request a Ride

Requesting an Uber in Puerto Rico is just as simple as it is back home. Here’s exactly what to do to get a ride hassle-free:

• Download the Uber app – If you don’t already have it, grab it from the App Store or Google Play before your trip.
• Set your pickup location – Open the app and enter your location. If you’re at the airport, check the app for designated pickup areas before requesting your ride.
• Choose your ride type – You’ll typically see options like UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Black for a more premium experience.
• Confirm and wait for your driver – The app will show your driver’s details, ETA, and car type. Always double-check the license plate and confirm the driver’s name before getting in.
• Enjoy the ride! – Many Uber drivers in Puerto Rico love chatting and sharing their favorite local spots. I’ve even had some turn the drive into a mini-tour! Definitely don’t be shy about asking for recommendations of things to do around Puerto Rico, you might just discover a hidden gem.

Can I rely on Uber to explore Puerto Rico?

Uber is a reliable option in San Juan and the surrounding metro areas. In San Juan, you’ll have no trouble finding a ride to the airport, beaches, or nightlife spots.

If you’re heading anywhere outside the metro area for day trips or road trips, Uber availability drops significantly. Wait times can be long, or you may not find a ride at all.

In towns like Rincón, Aguadilla, Ponce, and more remote parts of the island, Ubers are extremely limited, or unavailable altogether. If you’re planning to explore beyond San Juan, renting a car is your best bet.

Best Times To Use Uber In San Juan

Uber is easy to find in San Juan during the day and early evening, but like anywhere, demand fluctuates. Peak hours (weekday mornings, evening rush hour, and weekends) can lead to longer wait times and higher fares.

Late at night, Uber is still available in San Juan, but wait times may be longer, and surge pricing is more common, especially after bars and clubs close.

If you’re heading to the airport for an early flight, it’s smart to check the app in advance or consider scheduling a ride.

Pro Tip : A friend of mine once tried to meet me for dinner in Old San Juan while staying near the Distrito T-Mobile. A concert had just let out, and Uber wait times stretched for HOURS due to demand and traffic. She ended up walking to us quicker and it took over an hour! If you’re heading somewhere during a major event, plan ahead, check the app early, or consider other transportation options.

Is It Safe To Use Uber At Night In Puerto Rico?

Uber is generally safe to use at night in Puerto Rico, especially in San Juan, where drivers are readily available. Many visitors use it to get back to their hotels after dinner or a night out, and I’ve personally never had an issue.

That said, late-night rides can come with longer wait times and surge pricing, especially on weekends or after major events.

If you’re calling an Uber at night, stick to well-lit, busy areas and always confirm your driver’s name and license plate before getting in. I also always share my ride with a family or friend to be sure I get to my destination safely.

If Uber isn’t available or the wait is too long, taxis are another option. They’re easy to find in nightlife areas like Condado and Old San Juan.

Can You Schedule An Uber In Puerto Rico?

Yes! Uber’s “Schedule a Ride” feature is available in Puerto Rico, allowing you to book a ride in advance. This can be especially helpful if you need an early morning ride to the airport or want peace of mind before a big night out.

It’s important to know that scheduling doesn’t guarantee a driver, it just sends your request at your chosen time. Availability still depends on how many drivers are nearby, so if you’re scheduling a ride in a less busy area or in the middle of the night, have a backup plan just in case.

Rules & Etiquette for Uber in Puerto Rico

Using Uber in Puerto Rico is just like using it anywhere else, but there are a few things to keep in mind for a smooth experience.

Be mindful of sand and wet clothes. If you’re coming from the beach, shake off any sand and dry off before getting in the car. Some drivers may refuse rides if they think passengers will mess up their vehicle.

Confirm your ride before getting in. Just like anywhere else, always check the license plate and driver’s name before hopping in.

Respect local traffic and wait times. Some areas, like Old San Juan, have heavy traffic and one way roads. Pickup spots may be tricky. If your driver suggests an easier location to meet, it’s best to follow their lead as long as it’s safe.

Tipping. While tipping isn’t required, it’s always appreciated, especially for great service. (I cover more of this below!)

Communication. While many drivers in San Juan speak English, having a few Spanish phrases ready never hurts! (More on that next.)

How to Communicate with Your Uber Driver in Puerto Rico

Many Uber drivers in San Juan speak at least some English, but it’s always good to be prepared in case your driver primarily speaks Spanish. If you don’t speak Spanish, don’t worry – most drivers are used to tourists and will do their best to communicate.

If there’s a language barrier, Google Translate is your best friend! You can also send messages through the Uber app, which allows for automatic translation. A little effort goes a long way, and even knowing a few simple Spanish phrases can make the ride smoother.

Handy Spanish Phrases for Your Uber Ride

I always love traveling to places where another language is spoken or incorporated. Puerto Rico is especially fun because while English is widely spoken, Spanish is everywhere. It’s a great place to pick up a few new words and practice in a real-world setting!

Here are some handy phrases that might come in useful during your Uber ride:

Hola, cómo estás? – Hi, how are you?
Voy a [destination]. – I’m going to [destination].
Podemos parar aquí? – Can we stop here?
Cuánto tiempo tomará? – How long will it take?
Gracias, que tengas un buen día! – Thank you, have a great day!

Most drivers will appreciate the effort, and even if you just use “Hola” to say hi and “Gracias!” at the end of the ride, it helps create a friendly experience.

What Does Uber Cost In Puerto Rico? : Payment and Pricing Information

Uber in Puerto Rico is generally more affordable than taxis and cheaper than renting a car if you’re staying in San Juan. Fares are similar to what you’d find in major U.S. cities (I’ve always found it to be a bit more affordable!), but pricing fluctuates based on demand.

Expect to pay more during peak hours, major events, or when requesting longer rides.

Unlike taxis, Uber pricing is upfront and transparent, so you’ll know the cost before confirming your ride. Keep in mind that if you’re traveling outside of San Juan, a rental car may be the more cost-effective option.

Is Uber expensive In Puerto Rico?

Uber fares in Puerto Rico are reasonable compared to U.S. cities but can get pricey during surge pricing.

A short ride within San Juan may cost around $7-$15, while a trip from San Juan to the airport can range from $15-$25 depending on demand.

Longer distances outside of San Juan will cost significantly more, and in some cases, renting a car might be cheaper.

Uber is a great choice for short trips around San Juan, where traffic and parking can be a hassle. If you’re staying in the metro area, you’ll have easy access to Ubers for getting to restaurants, beaches, and even the airport – without the stress of driving.

However, if you plan to explore beyond San Juan, renting a car is your best bet. Uber is not widely available outside the metro area, and even when it is, wait times can be long and fares expensive. If you’re visiting places like Rincón, Ponce, or the El Yunque Rainforest, a rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

The bottom line? If you’re sticking to San Juan during your Puerto Rico vacation, Uber is convenient and affordable. But if your trip involves road trips across the island, renting a car is absolutely the way to go.

I’ve heard some stories about bad experiences with rental companies in Puerto Rico. In the past, I’ve used Alamo out of the SJU Airport, and have always had the best experience with them. It’s the only company I rent from now when visiting.

Can Uber Pickup At San Juan Airport?

Yes! Uber can pick up passengers at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan. It’s an easy and convenient option, but make sure you head to the designated rideshare pickup area to meet your driver.

Where to Meet Your Uber Driver at San Juan Airport (SJU)

At SJU, Uber pickups happen at Terminal A and Terminal B/C in the rideshare pickup zones outside the main arrivals area. Follow the airport signs for “Uber” or “Rideshare Pickup,” and check the app for the exact location.

Pro Tip :: It can be confusing arriving at new airport and trying to find where to go. If you have trouble finding the rideshare pickup zone at SJU, don’t hesitate to ask an employee. My experience has always been that they are happy to help.

Besides Uber, here are other ways to get from SJU to your destination:

Taxis – Available 24/7 with fixed rates (often higher than Uber).
Rental Cars – Best for longer stays or if you plan to explore beyond San Juan. I’ve always had wonderful luck with rental cars in Puerto Rico, and hands down my favorite place to rent from at SJU is Alamo.
Shuttles & Private Transfers – Many hotels offer shuttle services, and private transfers can be pre-booked.

Is Uber Safe In Puerto Rico?

Yes, Uber is generally safe in Puerto Rico, especially in San Juan and other metro areas. Many visitors and locals use it daily without issues, and I’ve personally had great experiences.

Do They Have Lyft In Puerto Rico?

No, Lyft does not operate in Puerto Rico. Uber is the only major rideshare option on the island, so if you’re looking for an app-based ride, Uber is your best bet.

Car Rentals In San Juan

Renting a car is the best option if you plan to explore beyond San Juan. It gives you total flexibility to visit places like El Yunque Rainforest, Rincón, or Ponce at your own pace, without relying on expensive rides or limited public transport.

Tip :: San Juan has heavy traffic and limited parking, so if you’re staying in the city, you might not need a car every day. Be sure to ask about parking at your hotel in advance.

Taxi in San Juan

Taxis are widely available in areas like Condado, Isla Verde, and Old San Juan. Unlike Uber, they operate on fixed rates rather than metered fares, so always confirm the price before starting your ride. I much prefer Uber to taxi when traveling in Puerto Rico.

Expect taxi fares to be higher than Uber. For example, a taxi from SJU Airport to Old San Juan costs around $20-$25.

Public Transport in San Juan

San Juan has limited but useful public transportation, including:
Buses (AMA) – Cheap but not always reliable for tourists.
Tren Urbano – A metro system with one line that runs about 10 miles and connects parts of San Juan.

Public transit is best for budget travelers but isn’t the most convenient option if you’re on a tight schedule.

We stayed for 5 nights and really loved our time there. I’m going to break down the rooms, location, amenities, service, pricing and more to help you decide if this is a good place for your trip to Puerto Rico.

Apartment Style Rooms

Being a family with a teenage son, we love to stay in hotel suites or rentals when we travel. We enjoy giving everyone a little extra room to spread out.

It’s so much fun to get comfy, relax and hang out together after a day of adventures instead of being crammed into a small hotel room.

We were so excited to find HiBird because each of its 27 rooms is suite or apartment style, combining the best of a hotel and rental!

This hotel offers 8 different style room options, ranging from studio suites to penthouses to 4 bedroom apartments. We chose a 2 bedroom apartment for our stay.

The hotel is full of bright colors, patterns, textures and designs.

Our favorite room features

The features vary from room to room, but some of our favorite things about the apartment we stayed in were :

• Large family area :: We ate together at the large dining room table many times during our trip, talking about the our adventures.
• Bathrooms in each bedroom :: The bathrooms in our unit were smaller, but being located in each bedroom was amazing as a family. The enclosed showers had excellent water pressure and premium bath products that are great after a long day in the sun.
• Desk & closet in each bedroom :: All of their rooms have a really well organized desk / closet / entertainment center structure that lets you unpack and keep organized during your stay.
• Balcony :: The balcony is a nice spot to catch the Puerto Rican breeze.
• Comfy Beds :: The king size beds are super comfy to sink into after a fun day.
• Adorable Aesthetics :: The hotel embraces a local design flavor with a fresh, trend-forward look. The bright units are full of thoughtful details, plants, artwork and design elements that make you feel at home.

Tip :: There are laundry rooms on every floor. We found it convenient to do laundry during a day that we hung out at the pool.

Condado Beach Location

Condado is known as the chic beachside city spot in San Juan. Just a 10 minute drive to Old San Juan, it’s a great neighborhood to stay in if you love the beach but want to stay central to the city and historical sites.

If you’re going to be staying in the Condado area, it’s so accessible to Old San Juan. There is so much to do in the area, including day trips from San Juan that will let you check out the rest of the island too!

The HiBird Hotel is located in the heart of Condado. It’s surrounded by some great restaurants and shops.

While the hotel isn’t directly on the beach, it’s close (and does have its own beach club). It’s less than 5 minutes to walk about a half a block down, then across the street to the beach.

Walking around the neighborhood, we stumbled upon salsa dance classes on the street and heard live music often. We had fun discovering healthy restaurants surrounding the hotel and exploring all of the shops.

Around The Property : Favorite Features + Amenities

HiBird offers a lot of features and amenities for its guests that really made us feel welcomed. All of the thoughtful details contributed to a pretty flawless stay for us.

Rooftop Pool

The rooftop pool was the highlight for us, as it should be after a hot day under the sun exploring Puerto Rico! It’s one of those hotels that begs you to build a lazy pool day into your itinerary.

The pool deck continues in the theme of the designs found throughout the property. You’ll walk into a space with plants sprinkled about and sun artwork brightening the walls.

Comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas invite you to relax. String lights shift the vibe after sunset, offering awesome nighttime views of Condado.

Tip :: Grab a fresh smoothie, juice or cocktail from Pure Fresh Food & Juice Bar before heading up to the pool deck!

The pool was one one of our favorite spots to hang during this trip.

Beach Club Access

Although HiBird is not located directly on the beach, it’s a quick walk less than 5 minutes across the street. Grab your complimentary beach towels from the front desk and head out for a day near the waves!

We used the phone app to find the beach club located just down & across the street.

Beaches on Puerto Rico are public and free, however it’s still nice to visit a beach club when you can for the amenities.

HiBird has its own beach club where they provide complimentary lounge chairs and umbrellas, centrally located on Condado Beach. The cream colored loungers are cushy and comfy, begging for a beach nap.

There is no food provided at this beach club, but there are plenty of spots around to grab snacks and drinks from.

Tip :: Scan your room key and follow the map to the beach club! The QR code on your key gives you access to everything from tour booking to local recommendations and more.

Healthy & Convenient On Site Restaurant

We ate at the hotel’s Pure Fresh Food & Juice Bar daily during our stay. Located in the lobby, they serve fresh smoothies, juices, avocado toast, breakfast items, tacos, salads, sandwiches & more.

You can choose between counter service, be served in their vibey air-conditioned indoor space, or sit street side under the covered patio.

As a family of healthy eaters, we really appreciated all of the options to choose from (an abundance of veggie & vegan choices!). Pure has a well-rounded menu, offered something for everyone.

Grab & Go Store

Quite possibly the largest hotel grab & go convenience store I’ve ever experienced, you’re covered here if you forget something.

You can self check-out healthy & yummy snacks, beverages, sun care products, beach & outdoor accessories, toiletries, etc. The display is lovely – and there’s even a full-blown selection of wines and liquors.

Fitness Center

Located on the pool deck, the fitness center offers cardio equipment, free weights and mats. Loved the look of it but didn’t get to experience it this trip.

When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by Hector with the warmest Puerto Rican welcome! He gave us a full tour of the property and made us feel like we had a new friend immediately.

Everyone on the team wants to be sure that you have a wonderful stay. They really care about getting to you and making sure that you’re completely taken care of.

Finding apartment-style accommodations that still offers cleaning service is pretty much unheard of … but here you can get an airbnb-style unit with daily cleaning service, and we really loved that.

Accessible Price Point

We found the price point of this hotel to be very competitive. In fact, because of the spacious apartment style rooms and amenities, the pricing offers an unmatched value.

Whether you’re a visiting solo or as a couple choosing a suite – or you’re with a large group of family or friends choosing an apartment, you’ll find the pricing to be really affordable compared to a lot of other surrounding spots.

Whether you’re the kind of traveler that wants to relax, or you’re ready for an adventure, Puerto Rico offers something for everyone. With so many experiences in arms reach of San Juan, it’s the perfect home base for you to “Live Boricua”, like the locals do.

There are also a lot of free things to do in Puerto Rico that won’t break the bank during your trip, including some MUST DO’s for your itinerary planning!

1. Visit An Uninhabited Island

One of my first ever Puerto Rico experiences was taking a catamaran to the beautiful uninhabited island of Cayo Icacos. It continues to be one of my most favorite travel memories ever!

The waters of Cayo Icacos are some of the clearest I’ve ever swam in!

Part of La Cordillera Nature Reserve, Cayo Icacos is known for its crystal clear warm turquoise waters and soft white sand. It’s completely uninhabited, with no services – but that’s part of its charm.

The catamaran ride out is SO much fun and part of the journey. Once the anchor is dropped, snorkel around the boat or explore the island. This is an experience I’ll do over and over when I visit.

2. Hop Aguadilla’s Pristine Beaches On A Water Adventure Tour

One of my favorite ways to experience the world famous beaches of Aguadilla on Puerto Rico’s West Side is to tour them from the water! Plus, the drive to Aguadilla is a great way to take in the island.

We hopped off the cruiser boat at several Aguadilla beaches to enjoy the perfect waters.

On one of my most recent trips, I had the opportunity to take a water adventure tour with Aguadilla Water Sports and it became my favorite tour to date. Run by a close-knit, super fun Puerto Rican family who are passionate about sharing their slice of heaven – it’s the most fun way to get a taste of Aguadilla.

Choose between jet-skis or cruiser boat and make multiple stops to snorkel, visit the beaches and take in the views.

3. Spend The Day Exploring A Tropical Rainforest

There’s something for every kind of visitor to El Yunque. Whether you love to hike, raise your adrenaline, bathe in waterfalls or learn about the sacred history and wildlife, you’ll find it in the rainforest.

El Yunque is a place I love to visit each time I return to Puerto Rico. We’ve zip-lined through the trees, taken a guided hiking tour where we jumped in the river, visited the waterfalls, and walked up the Yokahú Observation Tower.

4. Kick It Like A Local In Luquillo

Tucked just to the north of El Yunque, Luquillo is a laid-back coastal town. It’s home to some of Puerto Rico’s most beloved beaches and the famous Luquillo kiosks.

If you’ve got a half day excursion in El Yunque, Luquillo is the perfect location to spend the other half. Stroll through the kiosks to try favorite local food and drinks. You could also spend the afternoon enjoying the waves.

5. Glow In A Bioluminescent Bay

Being in a bioluminescent bay is a total bucket list item, and there are three (out five total in the world!) of these rare occurrences to choose from in Puerto Rico!

I had the opportunity to swim in La Parguera during my last visit Puerto Rico and it’s ABSOLUTELY an incredible experience. It’s mesmorizing how your skin literally glows, and so fascinating to learn about the phenomenon behind it.

All three bioluminescent bays are accessible by authorized tour company only.

The most convenient bioluminescent bay to San Juan is Laguna Grande. This is also the most visited one, because of how close it is to San Juan. To protect the bay, swimming is not allowed but there are several boating options.

If you’re on the south side of the island, you can visit La Parguera. This is the only bioluminescent bay on Puerto Rico that you can actually swim in.

Mosquito Bay on Vieques is said to give off the strongest light. Swimming is not allowed, but again there are several boating options.

Excursions From San Juan (Still On My Bucket List)

Each time I head to Puerto Rico, my own bucket list grows x10, there is SO much to do on the island! Here’s a few things that I can’t wait to do next visit. I’ll update once I’ve done them!

6. Snorkel Around One Of Puerto Rico’s Most Beloved Islands

A bucket list experience for me is to visit Culebra. Culebra is known for it’s famous beaches, like Flamenco Beach which is rated the 3rd Best Beach in the world, and holds the iconic Blue Flag Beach distinction.

You can easily take a ferry to Culebra, but locals advise that it’s best to stay on the island for the night if you’re staying in San Juan.

A better way to experience Culebra by hopping its beaches and getting a tour from the water is to take a snorkel tour. These tours are easily accessible from San Juan, and will give you a taste of the island, which might inspire a future trip.

7. Volunteer To Help Manatees

Why not combine some cool education with a volunteer opportunity during your trip?

The Caribbean Manatee Conservation Center offers 2 1/2 hour volunteer opportunities twice daily where you can learn about the center and animals they assist, as well as help to feed them.

8. Go Horse Back Riding On The Beach

If you’re a beach lover, check one off your list by horseback riding through it!

Carabalí Rainforest Park offers many wonderful experiences, and their horseback riding tour is at the top of my list.

If you’re spending a half day in El Yunque, this is a great tour to add to your day since it’s in the same area. You could even schedule a rainforest experience through Carabalí for the beginning of your day and end it riding on the beach.

9. Learn How To Surf

Puerto Rico is one of the world’s favorite surfing destinations. Why not try your balance at surfing on an island that boasts over 300 beaches?!

10. Lean Into Wellness Like The Locals Do

Towards the end of your stay in San Juan, plan a day of relaxation and wellness. Locals love to visit the mountain oasis of Coamo Hot Springs because of the many benefits of soaking in the mineral waters.

Coamo Hot Springs has you covered for your full day of wellness, with a menu of massages (starting at just $1/minute!) at its Fuga Spa. There’s a cafe with healthy snacks, and a beautiful garden.

Where To Stay In San Juan

San Juan is the perfect spot to stay in Puerto Rico, especially for your first visit as you get to know the island. It’s central to so many different iconic places you’ll want to visit, and has so much going on itself that you’ll want to spend some time there anyway.

Budget Option: Leave it to Puerto Rico to have a budget-friendly beachfront hotel option just steps from the sand. Stay at The Tryst Beachfront Hotel in the Condado neighborhood of San Juan and let the sound of the waves lull you to sleep.

Mid-Range Option: One of my favorite places to stay in Puerto Rico (especially with friends or family) is in the apartment style hotel, HiBird. We love it for its spacious apartments, beach access (with chairs and umbrellas), healthy restaurant, convenient Condado location and super friendly staff.

Alternatively, if you’re planning a wellness trip in San Juan, consider the wellness hotel La Botánica. All stays include morning yoga and a vegan breakfast!

Luxury Option: Enjoy the views at The Royal Sonesta San Juan and don’t sleep on their incredible pool and beachfront bar! It boasts a beautiful beachfront location at local favorite Isla Verde Beach. The Royal Sonesta is less than a mile from the airport and just 20 minutes from Old San Juan.

Having spent so much time exploring Puerto Rico, I know what visitors can expect. Here are answers to a few common questions I’m often asked.

How many days is enough in San Juan Puerto Rico?

Although any time in Puerto Rico is a gift, I recommend that visitors try to spend at least 5 days. There’s so much to fill your itinerary with, and factoring in some down time on travel days, this will leave you with a few full days to explore.

Can you do a day trip from San Juan to Vieques?

It is possible to visit Vieques for the day on the inexpensive ferry, but locals recommend staying the night when possible. If you are planning time on the island for the day, be sure to have your return ferry tickets planned out in advance so you don’t get stranded on the island by missing the last return ferry.

Is it worth going to Puerto Rico for 3 days?

ANYTIME in Puerto Rico is worth the time visiting, but unless you’re coming from east coast where it’s quicker to fly into, it’s recommended to stay for at least 5 days.

25 Free Things To Do In Puerto Rico

There’s so much to take in when you go to Puerto Rico – from visiting some of its hundreds of beaches, to seeing North America’s only tropical rainforest, to experiencing its spirited culture, architecture and history. It’s easy to fill your itinerary to the brim when planning a trip to Puerto Rico.

1. Go To The Beach

If you’re obsessed with the beach like I am, it will be at the top of your Puerto Rico itinerary. You can even head straight to Isla Verde Beach , just 10 minutes from the airport (like I did!).

This island is home to nearly 300 miles of beaches. You’ll find a variety from the secluded, cityscape, vibey beach towns and some of the best surf spots in North America. From white sand to black sand – Puerto Rico’s beaches are some of my favorite in the world.

All beaches in Puerto Rico are public and free to visit. Some beaches that have lifeguards and facilities (called balnearios) will charge a small fee to park. Some beaches with hotels have beach clubs where you can pay a small fee for chairs and an umbrella (these beaches are still free and open to everyone).

2. Visit The Only Tropical Rainforest In The U.S. National Forest System

Nature lovers can’t miss a visit to El Yunque National Forest. There’s so much to see and do, you could spend days in the rainforest and not see everything.

El Yunque has 24 miles of trails, from easy to challenging. There are gorgeous waterfalls, over 240 plant species and hundreds of animal species. If you’re into adventure, there are many tours that you can take around El Yunque, including guided tours, zip lining experiences, ATV tours and horseback riding.

The views from the top of the Yokahú Observation Tower are incredible.

Even if you only take a drive through the forest, and visit the Yokahú Observation Tower for the views you’ll be so happy you made a stop in the rainforest.

Tip :: I recommend bringing a rain poncho!

3. Go Salsa Dancing

My list of free things to do in Puerto Rico wouldn’t be complete without talking about salsa! It’s so much fun to randomly stumble upon salsa on the streets in Puerto Rico, and you’ll find plenty of free events too.

Salsa dancing is iconic in Puerto Rico, with rich deep origins in the culture. Here, it’s more than just a dance – salsa is a passionate, vibrant celebration. Witnessing Puerto Ricans dancing salsa is an infections energy that you can’t miss.

There are a lot of free salsa events, even festivals like the free Día de San Juan Salsa Fest. You can find free music, dancing and classes at bars and hotels throughout the week.

4. Fly A Kite At Castillo San Felipe Del Morro

Also known as El Morro, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a historic fortress in Old San Juan, built by the Spanish over 500 years ago. Overlooking the entrance to San Juan Bay, this awe striking landmark is an iconic lookout.

There is a cost to tour El Morro, but visiting the grounds where locals and fly kites is free and is a must during your trip.

It’s become a family tradition passed down through generations to fly kites at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, and is a playful, fun site to sit & watch or fly one yourself on a breezy day.

5. Take An Art Walk

As you take in Puerto Rico, you’ll notice street art throughout the island. Art-based festivals over the last decade, and an art community with rising support has paved way for Puerto Rico to become a highly recognized art scene.

There’s an abundance of street art throughout the island, but a great place to see it a lot of it is just 10 minutes outside of Old San Juan, in the Santurce neighborhood. Santurce is home to many galleries and museums, but you’ll be able to see free vibrant street art all around the neighborhood just by taking a stroll.

6. Walk Around Old San Juan

Plan at least one day, if not several to take in Old San Juan. There is so much to see around every corner, and walking the city is a great free way to take in multiple sites.

You’ll find so many sweet, romantic streets to explore in Old San Juan.

The streets of Old San Juan are bustling with the famous blue cobblestone roads dating back to the 18th century and vibrantly colored homes and buildings that are hundreds of years old. There are countless photo opportunities.

It’s so fun just to stroll the city, but you’ll also get free views of important landmarks along the way. Be sure to pin these spots on your map (some do have entry fees, but are free to walk around):

• The historic San Juan Gate, Puerta de Aguas
• The governor’s mansion, La Fortaleza
• Plazuela de la Rogativa, a sculpture to the side of the governor’s mansion.
• The recently remodeled historic Castillo San Felipe del Morro
• Stroll along one of Old San Juan’s most famous promenades, Paseo de la Princesa
• Visit Capitolo de Puerto Rico and look down at the beautiful coastline across the street

7. Cool Off In A Waterfall

Puerto Rico is home to many beautiful waterfalls. You could take them in quickly as you drive or hike by, or you could make a day of it and plan a hike, picnic and swimming day.

Note: Be aware of incoming weather conditions as waterfalls are typically in areas of lots of rainfall with potential for flash floods. Slippery conditions exist, and it’s not recommended to jump or swing from high rocks.

8. Catch A Sunrise & Sunset

Quite possibly the most iconic on the list of free Puerto Rico activities – watch a gorgeous sunrise or sunset!

You could even technically kick off the day watching the sunrise, enjoy a road trip to the other side of the island and end the day with a sunset (perfect day!).

There are countless spots to watch the sunrise and sunset in Puerto Rico. A couple favorites are:

• Sunrise at Luquillo Beach before heading to El Yunque Rainforest
• Sunset at Steps Beach (Playa Escalera) in Rincón OR at La Guancha Boardwalk in Ponce after a day in the sun

9. Go On A Roadtrip

Ok, so I guess this is technically not completely free since you’ll need to have a car and purchase gas … but if you’re already renting a car on the island, I highly recommend making your travels around the island a part of your itinerary.

Puerto Rico is a gorgeous island, and its landscapes are so diverse. There are several climate zones, mountains, flat lands, rainforests, dry forests and tons of beaches.

The drives around the island are stunning. At nearly 100 miles long, it takes several hours to drive across Puerto Rico. If you’re visiting multiple parts of the island, definitely make your road trip a part of your adventure.

On a drive out west from San Juan, there are a ton of picturesque spots including:

• El Túnel del Tren en Guajataca
• Cara del Indio

10. Visit A Music Video Location

Several famous music videos were filmed in Puerto Rico!

Quite possibly the most well-known is Despacito, by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. It was filmed at La Perla, a neighborhood in Old San Juan. Locals hope tourism can continue to be a positive force in growing what once had a reputation as being a dangerous barrio. Scenes from Despacito were also filmed at La Factoria bar.

Note, Safety in La Perla: Of course it’s advised to use caution anywhere you visit, especially when traveling to a new destination. La Perla is a neighborhood that is continuing to be restored. Be respectful when you visit. Experts warn against visiting La Perla at night.

A lot of famous movies have scenes filmed in Puerto Rico too, including parts of Pirates of The Caribbean, Contact and more!

11. Take A Hike

Puerto Rico has an abundance of stunning hikes, in many of their climate zones.

With 1 National Forest, 19 State Forests and 36 Nature Reserves, you’ll find tons of free trails to hike around the island. Some favorites are located in:

• El Yunque National Forest – here you’ll find 24 miles of trails. Hikes range from easy to challenging, with a variety of lengths.
• Bosque Estatal Toro Negro – with over 11 miles of hiking trails, there are gorgeous views throughout.
• Cueva del Viento – one of the many trails leads to a cave that encourages visitors with a staircase leading down to it!

12. Go Snorkeling

Crystal clear turquoise warm waters surround Puerto Rico. There are coral reefs and abundance of marine life. There’s no shortage of great snorkel spots in Puerto Rico!

If you have your own snorkel gear, it’s a great free activity. If you didn’t bring snorkel gear, it can be rented cheaply, or you can take a fun snorkel tour.

13. Go Birdwatching

Puerto Rico is home to over 300 species of birds! Whether you’re a passionate birdwatcher or it’s your first time, you are in for a treat.

With so many state forests, parks and nature reserves on Puerto Rico, there are plenty of opportunities to get quiet in nature with the birds.

I’ve already mentioned many spots throughout the island that would be wonderful to birdwatch. Another wonderful (free!) spot is the Cambalache State Forest. It’s a 50 minute drive west from San Juan, but visiting is like being in another world.

14. Visit A Lighthouse

Lighthouses are so iconic to any coastal trip. It’s so fun to learn about their history.

There are 16 surviving lighthouses in Puerto Rico, including some that are free to visit. Faro Punta Tuna is being restored but is free to the public and open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m

Free Things To Do In Puerto Rico (On My Bucket List)

I’m a huge fan of keeping travel bucket lists and LOVE to check off places I want to visit. Puerto Rico is one of those places that you leave with a longer list of things you want to do next visit than the list you arrived with!

These are some Puerto Rico bucket list activities that I’m really excited to check off my list next visits. I promise to update my experiences:

15. Spend The Day In A Dry Forest

It’s incredible that the Guánica Dry Forest is just a couple hours drive from El Yunque, the tropical rainforest that gets over 200 inches of rain a year. The Guánica Dry Forest only gets about 30 inches a year!

One of the world’s largest tropical coastal dry forests, Guánica Dry Forest is home to hundreds of animal and plant species.

16. Visit Casa Bacardí

Puerto Rico is the “Rum Capital of the World” with deep rooted history in production going back to the 15th century.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy rum while you’re visiting the island, and if you get the chance to visit a distillery, you should experience it!

Although Casa Bacardí no longer offers free tours, you can still visit for free. You’ll be welcomed with gorgeous views, and can enjoy the restaurant and Pavilion.

17. Visit An Art Gallery

Puerto Rico has a rich art history, and there are many organizations that celebrate its local artists.

Although you’ll see street art throughout your travels around the island, there are several free art galleries that locals say are a must-visit ::

18. Drink A Piña Colada At Its Birthplace

You must try the famous coconut and pineapple flavored rum drink (or its non-alcoholic version) while visiting Puerto Rico!

Although there’s some lighthearted debate around where it was first created, you’ll find delicious Piña Colada’s throughout Puerto Rico. Drinking one is such a fun way to lean into a decades long tradition when visiting the island.

You can try the traditional drink at either of the spots that claim to have created it for less than $15 (and both offer nights with live music!) ::

Or, if you’re looking to cool off after a day in the sun, try a Piña Colada popsicle at Señor Paleta for just $3.85!

19. Drink Local Coffee

Puerto Rico is famous for its rich historical roots in growing, processing and exporting coffee. To this day, it continues to keep the traditions of one of the world’s favorite beverages alive.

Puerto Rican coffee has a unique taste because of its volcanic soil and altitude levels. You must try a local coffee when visiting!

You’ll find ways to enjoy local favorites throughout your visit. Most hotels serve complimentary local varieties. You’ll find local coffee shops to support throughout the island. Or, a wonderful way to spend the day – you can even tour a coffee hacienda!

20. Take A Yoga Class

Wellness is a way of life in Puerto Rico, here you’ll find a variety of ways to come back to self care (or introduce new healthy habits).

From flowing beachside to breathing in and out at a traditional studio, Puerto Rico offers some wonderful yoga classes.

You can find yoga studios, eco-resorts with retreats and experiences in all corners of the island. Classes are offered throughout the day, and for a variety of prices (typically under $25).

Cheap Things To Do In Puerto Rico (On My Bucket List)

Some of the Puerto Rican experiences still on my bucket list don’t have huge price tags associated with them! I can’t wait to check out these spots during my next trips to the island.

21. Take The Ferry To Culebra Or Vieques

This is at the VERY TOP of my Puerto Rico bucket list, I cannot wait to visit Culebra and Vieques!

Vieques and Culebra are two islands off the east coast of the main island, nicknamed the Spanish Virgin Islands. They’re home to stunning beaches, nature, wildlife, quaint towns and vibrant locals – but each island has a completely different feel. Locals call them MUST VISIT destinations.

You can fly to each island, but you can also take the ferry and it’s cheap! Tickets are just roughly $3 each. There is an additional fee tourist fee of $2 to visit Culebra.

Ferry rides take about 30 minutes from Ceiba to Vieques and about 45 minutes from Ceiba to Culebra. Tickets can be purchased through Autoridad de Transporte Marítimo (ATM).

Note: If you’re planning a visit to either island, be sure that you have your return ferry time planned. Locals have told me that it’s easy to get stranded on the island overnight if you don’t plan for your return in advance. There are hotels and rentals, but that could make a cheap visit to Puerto Rico much more expensive if you didn’t plan for it.

22. Spend The Day At A Taíno Archeological Site

The Taíno people inhibited Puerto Rico before the Spanish people arrived.

There are several archeological sites on Puerto Rico where you can visit the ruins, artifacts, and learn history about the Taíno.

The Taína Route runs through several towns on the island. Spending time in these locations is a great way to learn about Taíno history. The route includes a stop at one of the most notorious Taíno sites, Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Cagüana.

23. Relax At The Coamo Hot Springs

You may not have thought about seeking out a warm water experience when you’re visiting the tropics! Locals love to visit the Coamo Hot Springs because of the advantage of soaking in the mineral waters. Entry is just $3.35!

After rinsing off in a cool shower, you can experience the warm and hot pools. You can even get a massage for $1 a minute in the on-site Fuga Spa.

I can’t wait to visit for a day of self care!

24. Tour San Felipe del Morro AND Castillo San Cristóbal (Two For One!)

One of the best cheap Puerto Rico deals is this two for one deal. Visit two famous historical sites in Old San Juan for the price of one!

The landmarks San Felipe Del Morro (where locals fly kites in the yard) and Castillo San Cristóbal entry fee is just $10 and you get access to both sites! It’s even free to visit on certain holidays!

Both tours offer park ranger led tours, or you’re free to explore on your own. There are many wonderful photo spots throughout.

25. Spend The Day In A Puerto Rican Botanical Garden

One of my favorite things to do in the tropics is to visit botanical gardens. It’s a wonderful way to learn about the environment, and to see an abundance of the native plant and flower species on the island.

There are several botanical gardens located around Puerto Rico, featuring thousands of plants. Entry fees are typically just a few dollars. Be sure to check in advance – some require reservations.

Getting Around Puerto Rico

There are several ways to get around Puerto Rico including driving, bus, uber, ferry and even some local trolleys.

Public transportation is not the greatest, and can’t be relied on to easily get from destination to destination.

If you want to see much of the island, renting a car will be your best bet. Driving is safe in Puerto Rico, and is easy for Americans to adapt to since the roads are kept up and marked like they are on the mainland of the US. Renting a car will save you time and allow you to be in control of your itinerary.

If you’re staying local to one town, like the San Juan area, you could get away with walking and taking Uber. Ubers in Puerto Rico are safe and friendly. Many of the times that I’ve taken Uber in Puerto Rico, the driver has acted like a tour guide and given me local insight. The cost of Uber in Puerto Rico is very comparable to what you find in the continental US – rides can add up quickly, so if you’re planning to explore a lot, you might consider a car instead.
