I came across a lot of Wayfinder Waikiki reviews before my stay and was excited to experience it for myself during a recent solo trip to the islands. If you’re deciding where to stay in Oahu, Wayfinder Waikiki is definitely a boutique hotel you should consider!

Wayfinder Waikiki Reviews: An Affordable Waikiki Boutique Hotel

Wayfinder Waikiki is one of the few hotels on Oahu that blends boutique style with a nod to Waikiki culture and an approachable price point. It’s creative, welcoming, and clearly designed for travelers who appreciate aesthetics, location, and a little bit of fun baked into their stay.

During my solo trip in March, I spent five nights at the Wayfinder Waikiki and got a feel for what it does incredibly well – and where it may fall short depending on what you’re looking for. From the pool scene and events to dining, amenities, and service, this is my honest take on what stood out – and what to know before you book.

Location

Wayfinder Waikiki is located along the Ala Wai Canal, just a few blocks back from the beach. It’s not oceanfront, but I walked to Waikiki Beach daily with zero issues. It’s super accessible on foot, and felt really safe for me as a solo female traveler.

The location is ideal for travelers who want to stay in Waikiki but prefer to be slightly removed from the high-traffic hustle of the main strip.

This part of town feels a little more relaxed, while still being close to all the action. It’s also a convenient launch point if you’re planning to explore beyond Waikiki, with quick access to the highway for day trips to the North Shore, Windward side, or Diamond Head.

It’s such a great location near Waikiki beach, that booking early is a good idea during peak Hawaii travel like the summer or the winter holidays. This is one of the hotels that will sell out in advance.

What’s Nearby

Here are a few favorite spots that were just blocks away from the hotel:

  • International Marketplace – A lively, open-air shopping and dining center (grab a drink at The Mai Tai Bar if you’re feeling festive).
  • Marugame Udon – A casual noodle spot with a cult following. The line is always long, and it’s absolutely worth it.
  • Target – Perfect for beach snacks, sunscreen, or anything you forgot to pack.
  • ABC Stores Galore – If you’ve visited Hawaii before, you’re familiar with the ever-present ABC stores. There are several near Wayfinder for quick stops to pick up necessities.

Tip : Local and visitor favorite Kailua Beach is just a 30 minute drive from Wayfinder Waikiki. Head there in the early morning before it gets too crowded.

Checking In: The Lobby + First Impressions

After sending my car to valet (more on that below), I was greeted with the warmest Aloha. Wayfinder Waikiki’s check-in experience really set the tone for the rest of my stay.

An open lobby with a blue coffee shop and reception desk

The front desk team handed me a printed card with everything I needed to know. It included a full list of upcoming happenings around the property, a discount for the on-site restaurant, a list of complimentary beach gear, and even a free drink token to use at the pool bar. All of it came with a fresh orchid bloom—and honestly, it was the sweetest welcome detail.

The lobby is open-air and breezy. It blends that perfect mix of tropical Waikiki boutique hotel style and laid-back Hawaiian energy. After a long travel day, it was exactly the welcome I needed.

Valet Parking

Valet parking is available on-site. When I visited, the cost was $49 (plus tax) per night. I found it super convenient as a solo traveler, and it made check-in a breeze.

Tip : Valet parking at Wayfinder Waikiki does include unlimited in-and-out privileges, but availability is limited. I did notice some street parking around the property as well.

The Rooms at Wayfinder Waikiki

Wayfinder Waikiki is a reimagined mid-century motel, and the design team did an incredible job transforming it into something fresh, stylish, and full of personality.

Two beds with white sheets and colorful pillows and backboards, with a light between them.

I booked my room super last minute (literally the day before) and stayed in a Two Double Beds with Lanai room. The space was playful and cozy, filled with fun, quirky touches like vintage-style records on the wall, and local magazines. The design style carries through every room category, so even the smaller rooms feel intentional and welcoming.

My lanai faced the Ala Moana and mountain side. It had a smaller footprint, but was still such a great feature to have. I loved using it every morning.

There’s a mini fridge, which was perfect for storing leftovers, and I appreciated the two complimentary bottles of water and cozy robe provided for the stay. They even provided a quirky postcard and cute Wayfinder Waikiki pen.

A Note On Noise : Because Wayfinder is an older building, you may notice some light noise – both from the street and neighboring rooms. I was right next to the elevator and honestly expected the worst, but it wasn’t bad at all. I did hear some street noise and luckily had quiet neighbors. Still, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re a particularly light sleeper.

The Bathrooms + Bath Products

The bathroom is compact but thoughtfully designed. Everything felt clean and functional, and the Grown Alchemist bath products completely won me over. The damask rose, black pepper, and sage shampoo was honestly next-level – so soothing after a day in the sun and saltwater. (I’m a sucker for a good hotel shower setup, and this one delivered.)

Other Room Options

Wayfinder also offers Pool House Suites and Penthouses if you’re looking to upgrade your stay or need more space.

What It Costs To Stay At Wayfinder Waikiki

Room prices vary depending on the time of year, but rates typically range from $150–$375 per night.

For a stylish Waikiki boutique hotel with thoughtful amenities and a great location, it really feels like a solid value.

The Pool Scene

Wayfinder’s pool area feels like a true oasis tucked into the heart of busy Waikiki. It’s beautifully landscaped with lush tropical foliage, glowing tiki torches, and a relaxed, chill energy that honestly would make it easy to spend the whole day here.

A blue pool with tropical foliage, a white building and green and white striped chairs with purple umbrellas

There are about twenty lounge chairs with umbrellas and a great hot tub. Guests also have access to thoughtful extras like complimentary towels, reef-safe sunscreen, aloe for after a day under the sun, and freshly brewed island iced tea.

The team even thought to provide bar top tables near the pool, which I found to be perfect for eating takeout from the onsite Redfish restaurant, or setting up with my laptop to get a little work done outside.

The pool bar serves delicious cocktails, small bites, and has super friendly waitstaff. I found the service here especially attentive and easygoing, without ever feeling too “scene-y.”

Many of the hotel’s events and offerings happen poolside, including live DJs and movement classes. These pop-up experiences add to the playful but laid-back vibe, making the space feel more like a community hangout than a standard hotel pool.

Wayfinder Waikiki Events + Experiences

One of the things that really sets Wayfinder apart is how much they integrate local culture, music, and wellness into your stay. It doesn’t feel like an afterthought – it’s woven into the experience.

Throughout the week, the hotel hosts a rotating schedule of poolside singers, live DJs, and movement classes like E Ola Koa Circuit, Kaimana Aqua Fit, and Poolside Punawai Stretch.

I took the Poolside Punawai Stretch during my stay and loved every minute of it. As a yoga teacher, I thought it was the perfect way to gently move in a way that was accessible to all levels, while enjoying the breeze and pool views. The instructor, Nick, created such a welcoming space.

Wayfinder also offers access to experiences that take you off property, like the Kako‘o ‘Ōiwi Farm Experience, which gives guests a chance to connect with the land and community. These are optional and paid separately, but I love that the hotel encourages visitors to lean into the culture and support local.

Whether you’re looking for movement, music, or something more immersive, there’s always something happening – and it makes the property feel alive in the best way.

Eat + Drink : Dining at Wayfinder Waikiki

I was happily surprised by how many food and drink options Wayfinder offers – including plenty of vegan-friendly choices. I ended up eating on-site several times during my stay, and everything I tried was fresh, flavorful, and super convenient.

Whether you’re grabbing something casual to take to the pool or sipping a cocktail in the sunshine, there’s something for every kind of traveler here.

Redfish By Foodland Poke Bar

Redfish is the hotel’s signature poke spot – and it’s a gem. I ordered the vegan poke bowl twice during my stay and loved eating it poolside. It was perfect for dinner after a long day of island adventures.

I also noticed several vegan options on the breakfast menu, though I didn’t get a chance to try them this time.

Lost + Found Poolside Speakeasy

Tucked near the pool, Lost + Found serves tall, refreshing cocktails in the best possible setting. This is also where you can redeem your complimentary welcome drink (I opted for the piña colada).

I tried the Fresh Hawaiian Pineapple and it was so good I immediately ordered another round (and have since recreated it at home!). It’s a laid-back space that doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I loved.

B-Side Coffee Bar

Having a solid coffee bar right in the lobby was a win. I grabbed drinks from B-Side several times during my stay, and the local coffee never disappointed. It’s a great spot for a quick morning pick-me-up or a mid-afternoon recharge, especially if you’re working remotely or heading out for the day.

Complimentary Extras You’ll Want to Know About

Confession: I didn’t actually read the full check-in card until the day I was leaving – but when I did, I realized just how many thoughtful extras Wayfinder offers their guests.

They provide complimentary beach towels, chairs, and boogie boards, which is perfect if you’re heading to the beach without your own gear.

Even better? You can check out a GoPro to use for the day – such a fun touch for documenting your ocean adventures!

These little additions aren’t just convenient – they’re the kind of perks that make your trip smoother without needing to spend extra or pack more. And once again, it just shows how intentionally the Wayfinder team has thought about their guests’ experience, and want your stay to be one to remember.

Guest Experience

Everyone I interacted with at Wayfinder was friendly and helpful—from the warm welcome at check-in, to the attentive service poolside, to the movement instructors taking extra time out of their day to make sure you’re having the best time on the island. The overall vibe is relaxed and unpretentious, and the staff reflects that in the best way.

It’s not over-the-top hospitality (this isn’t a luxury resort), but you can tell the team genuinely wants guests to feel comfortable and cared for. Little details—like the free drink token, thoughtful amenities, and the staff’s eagerness to share their favorite local spots – added up to a really memorable experience for me.

If you’re someone who appreciates a more laid-back, locally rooted kind of service, Wayfinder Waikiki delivers exactly that.

Who This Hotel Is For (and Who Might Skip It)

If you’re looking for a Waikiki boutique hotel that’s full of personality, thoughtfully designed, has a great pool scene, and is close to the beach without being right in the middle of the crowds – Wayfinder might is your spot.

This is a great choice for:

  • Solo travelers
  • Couples or friends
  • Wellness lovers
  • Design-forward travelers
  • Families looking for an affordable, nice hotel near Waikiki that aren’t looking for the typical family resort
  • Anyone looking for a laid-back, local-feeling stay with easy beach access

You might want to skip it if:

  • You’re looking for full-on luxury or oceanfront views
  • You’re extremely sensitive to sound (the building is older and not fully soundproofed)
  • You need family-style amenities like a kids’ club or family-driven pool experience

Wayfinder isn’t trying to be a five-star resort – it’s trying to be something cooler, more conscious, and way more affordable. And it succeeds!

Travel has always been a passion for our family. Exploring new destinations, experiencing different cultures, and making memories together is at the top of our list. Of course, we especially love it when our travels involve a coastline! Because we love to travel often, we are always on the lookout for ways to maximize our travel experiences. I would often wonder about how to fly for free. In this post, I’m sharing our secret to flying for free – the companion pass.

This is NOT a sponsored post. I’ve just had so many people ask about how we travel BOGO, that I wanted to explain how we fly for free with our companion pass. We’re sort of obsessed with it!

I’m going to take this moment to say – I could dive a WHOLE lot deeper into travel rewards than I have so far. I’ll continue to update this post as I learn more! There are definitely strategies based on time of year and various promotions that are recommended (in order to maximize the sign up perks). I didn’t follow a specific strategy, I just happened to catch a great promo. I’ve continued to earn the companion pass each year since, based on our purchases and travel with Southwest Airlines.

Our Intro To Earning Travel Rewards

Our journey to enjoying travel rewards began when we discovered the power of travel credit cards. We started with the Chase Sapphire Visa, which I had read about being one of the best travel rewards program.

With our sign up bones and points from our first few months of purchases, we earned enough points for a FREE 5 night stay at the luxurious Grand Hyatt Kauai. It was such a dream! This was an experience that opened our eyes to the possibilities of free travel using rewards, we were sold.

We Love Southwest Airlines

Living in the US, Southwest Airlines quickly became our preferred airline over the years. We adore the conveniences they offer, from free baggage policies to hassle-free flight changes. We fly with them often enough that their convenience – and their fun spirited vibe – were what kept us loyal.

Traveling fairly often for work and personal trips with Southwest Airlines had us earning a fair amount of Rapid Rewards points just with flights alone. However, we realized that if we really wanted to maximize the money we were dedicating to travel, we could do more.

Earning The Southwest Airlines Companion Pass And Flying BOGO

According to the Southwest website in 2023, “A Member who earns 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points or who flies 100 qualifying one-way flights booked through Southwest Airlines per the calendar year will qualify for Companion Pass”.

In the spring of 2021, we stumbled upon a promotion that would change our travel game forever. Southwest Airlines was offering a Companion Pass if we signed up for their Southwest Rapids Rewards Visa and spent a certain minimum (I believe around $4000) on qualifying purchases within the first three months. We knew we had upcoming expenses that could meet this requirement, and decided to go for it.

Once we received the credit card, we were conscious about swiping it for our everyday purchases. The Southwest Rapid Rewards card also offers higher point earnings for a handful of brands and services. We made sure to use the card when it would earn bonus points.

The first place that we flew Walt free on my companion pass was to Hawaii! Our visits there are always magical. If you love Hawaii too, check out this extensive list of things to do for free on Kauai.

How To Earn Rapid Rewards Points To Earn Your Companion Pass

Southwest changes their sign up offer from time to time, so be sure to check the current offer. There are various ways that you can earn Rapid Rewards to count towards your companion pass :

  • Utilize your initial sign up bonus. Be sure to keep your eye on the date that you need to spend the minimum amount by in order to earn this.
  • Spend with your Southwest Rapid Rewards card. You gain 1 point for every $1 spent (and 2 points for every $1 at Southwest!). There are great promotions from time to time, allowing you to earn extra points with various vendors.
  • Share with a friend. You can earn 15,000 to 20,000 bonus points (up to 100,000 in a calendar year) when a friend signs up with your referral.
  • Fly on Southwest. One of the quickest ways to earn more Rapid Rewards is to earn points during your flight!
  • Book other parts of your travel through Southwest’s partners. Their site lists out a ton of partners that will help you earn bonus points.

Where We’ve Flown Bogo

Since earning the Companion Pass, we’ve been thrilled with what it’s offered us, and how much Walt has gotten to fly for free with me. While only paying taxes and fees (just $5.60 in the continental US!), we’ve jetted off to :

  • island hop Hawaii (twice)
  • explore the Yucatan Peninsula area in Mexico
  • venture Belize (twice)
  • catch a Coldplay concert in Texas on a whim
  • roam all around the continental US

Smooth Skies And Flight Bookings

Earning the companion pass has been like having a golden ticket to adventure, and we’ve embraced it wholeheartedly. The companion pass is so easy to use and can all be managed in your account online :

  • assign your companion (you can change who it’s assigned to up to 3 times in a calendar year)
  • purchase your ticket (you can purchase a ticket using rewards and STILL use your companion pass – mind blown!)
  • assign your companion to the flight (there are no restrictions to when or how many times your companion can fly with you as long as there is a seat available).
  • pay the taxes and fees you would pay anyway (this is typically around $5, but we’ve paid up to $100 depending on international fees)
  • manage your companion and A-List status towards next year
  • enjoy your vacay extra hard because BOGO travel

Additional Perks We Love

The benefits of the Southwest Rapid Rewards card go beyond the Companion Pass. We love the extra Rapid Rewards points, priority boarding (we’ve also earned A-List!), complimentary drinks from time to time, complimentary wifi from time to time, special promotions, and more. To amplify our rewards, we even got the Southwest Business Card and use it for all our business expenses. It’s a win-win for our family!

Beyond the companion pass, we’ve been able to earn a lot more free travel because of the Rapid Rewards points we get by using use the card often. Most of the time when we fly with Southwest, our flights are booked using points, making them free for the three of us while only using points for 2 tickets (and the companion pass for the 3rd). Note : travel booked with Rapid Rewards points does NOT count towards earning or re-earning the companion pass.

Responsible Credit Card Usage

This paragraph feels important for me to write. We’ve been extremely conscious about how we use our travel credit cards, and I encourage this so strongly.

While we revel in the perks of our travel credit cards and are so grateful for them, it’s crucial to stress responsible usage. We pay off our balances in full each month on auto-pay and only charge what we can comfortably afford. This way, we continue to reap the benefits without accumulating debt.

See You In The Air – Hopefully You Fly For Free Too!

Flying BOGO is a game-changer, and the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass has been our passport to unforgettable adventures. I love this program so much, and am so grateful that they have a rewards program that allows a loved one to fly for free.

If you’re looking to earn travel rewards, want a free companion pass and travel where Southwest Airlines offers routes, definitely consider the Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card. Your next adventure awaits – and it could be a lot closer (and less expensive!) than you think!

Here is a link to the current Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card promotion!

Life is a whirlwind of responsibilities, deadlines, and constant connectivity. It truly seems to be moving faster and faster anymore, doesn’t it?! It really takes a conscious effort to slow down and get present, even when you’re on trying to unwind on your beach vacation.

In the midst of our bustling routines, planning a beach vacation becomes a hopeful retreat, promising moments of peace and rejuvenation. The problem is that we are so used to the go-go-go lifestyle, that unplugging once we get to our vacation can create new stress! It can be surprisingly challenging to leave the demands of daily life behind and just let GO.

I’ve definitely taken trips that feel like I never quite relax in the way I wanted to, and come back feeling like I was so busy on my trip trying to fit everything in that I need another vacation (who is with me on this?!). The impulse to check emails, respond to messages, and keep a balance of connection can be hard to resist or just straight up difficult to achieve, even when we arrive at the dreamiest of beach destinations.

8 Simple Ways to Actually Unwind On Your Beach Vacation

After enough times of feeling like I needed a vacation from my vacation, I’ve learned that it takes just a little bit of thoughtful effort to slip into that beachy state of mind. I love and apply these simple ways of letting go each time I travel, find that I’m able to more deeply immerse myself in the serenity of my beach trip – and come home feeling like I actually took that vacation I needed.

Choose Your Beach Oasis Thoughtfully

peaceful-sunrise-over-the-ocean-in-hawaii-perfec-location-to-unwind-on-your-beach-vacation

There are SO many different options when it comes to the style of beach vacation that you can take. Take the time to research and decide on a destination that truly resonates with the retreat you’re needing. Although this first step takes just a little more planning than the rest, it’s well worth a little extra effort.

We took a trip to Florida when Kai was little and were SO looking forward to chilling under the sun – we didn’t realize until we checked in that our picturesque beachfront hotel was also the destination for hundreds of spring breakers!

Whether you’ve opted for a luxurious all-inclusive beachfront resort, a cozy cottage nestled in lush greenery, a fun-filled beach with a boardwalk, or a serene beachfront villa with the sound of the waves lulling you to sleep after the sunset, taking the time to decide where you’re headed will set the tone for your trip.

When you’re planning your beach vacation, consider things like :

  • Travel time
  • Ease of entry into your final destination (especially if you’re traveling internationally)
  • How you’ll get around the area
  • Do you want to experience any excursions or simply lounge near the waves?
  • The proximity of restaurants and activities
  • How busy or noisy it is around where you’re staying

Plan Your Digital Detox

Before you head to paradise, plan a conscious step back from technology (or put that phone down completely if you’re going all in!). In our increasingly connected world, it’s essential to allocate dedicated time to unplug and recharge.

Inform clients, colleagues, family and friends about your time off and set up your away message (out of office!) to manage expectations and keep interruptions at bay. Even consider setting some focus or do not disturb times on your devices.

By disconnecting to your level of comfort from the virtual world, you’ll be free to immerse yourself in the natural wonders around you, ground and embrace the simplicity of living in the present moment, unwinding on your beach vacation.

Consciously Capture + POST Moments

While it’s tempting to capture every moment through a lens (and share it online!), practice getting present and enjoying your surroundings without constantly reaching for your camera or phone. You’ve given yourself this time to get present, so allow yourself to take that true step back.

Etch the precious memories you experience in your heart. Take mental snapshots of the breathtaking sunsets, the laughter-filled beach time, and the quiet moments of solitude.

When you do reach for your camera, take that photo or video and then put your device back down. Have fun looking back through your memories when you return home, and post about them then to share with your loved ones!

Align Everyone’s Expectations

If you’re traveling with others, it’s essential to have everyone on the same page about the trip’s purpose and pace.

Beach getaways can mean different things to different people. Some may seek adventure and water sports, while others may yearn for uninterrupted relaxation on a sun-kissed beach. Have fun planning your trip and create a harmonious itinerary that accommodates everyone’s desires. You might even consider separating a bit during the trip so that everyone can enjoy the day how they want, and come together as a group later on.

Savor That First Step On The Sand

Who else feels at HOME when you take your first step onto the sand after you’re checked in, bags dropped in the room and have slipped into your sandals?

As you take that first step onto the warm, velvety sand, pause and take it all in. Let the soothing sensation of the beach under your feet set the tone of your time away. Take a deep breath, inhaling the salty air and notice how calming it is. Allow your first steps in the waves to wash away any busy feelings, and embrace a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be in such a beautiful setting.

Try Embracing A Relaxed Itinerary

In our fast-paced lives, we often tend to over-plan our vacations (it’s me, hi!), trying to squeeze in as many activities as possible. I am one to get so excited when I’m visiting a new destination or returning to a favorite place, wanting to take it ALL in. I’ve found that when I’m heading to the shore to relax, planning a thoughtful and simple itinerary helps me do less. You might even consider a yoga retreat for the ultimate relaxation!

Try something different this trip, resist the urge to over-plan your beach escape. Leave room for lazy days and spontaneous beach adventures. Allow yourself the freedom to indulge in downtime, sleep in, stroll on the beach, and leisurely read in your lounge chair, especially during the initial days. Let the ebb and flow of the tide guide your daily rhythm, and you’ll find yourself naturally unwinding into the slower pace of beach life.

I’m a big fan of slowed-down mornings at the beach. Even if waking up early to catch the sunrise is what you’re craving, let yourself stay awhile after it rises. Ease into breakfast and a beach stroll or some movement before your plans for the day.

Savor Every Moment

Beach destinations have a unique way of heightening our senses and drawing us into the present moment – the symphony of the sea, the feeling of warm sand between your toes, and the smell of the salty air can all lull us into the here and now.

Let yourself be present, fully immersing yourself in the beach ambiance surrounding you. Feel the sea breeze against your skin, listen to the rhythmic crashing of waves, relish the stunning sunsets that paint the sky in a myriad of colors and savor every sip from that coconut in your hand.

By staying in the moment, you’ll create a deeper connection with your surroundings and yourself, really allowing your beach retreat to heal your busy heart. Practicing presence while you’re away is a beautiful reminder as you head back into your routine.

Find Balanced Beach Bliss

Strike a balance during your beach vacation to savor each moment and leave feeling revitalized.

Nourish your body with wholesome local delights like delicious tropical fruits and smoothies, while enjoying occasional treats guilt-free like a few scoops of nice cream! Embrace both relaxation and exploration—soak up the sun while you lounge poolside with a book and take leisurely beach walks or bike along the boardwalk without an agenda .

Listen to your body and mind’s needs, creating a well-rounded beach retreat that leaves you fulfilled and balanced.

Salt water heals everything.

I so hope that these ideas help you to get that R&R you’ve been craving and unwind on your beach vacation. By thoughtfully planning your stay, embracing the moment, and disconnecting from the everyday hustle, you’ll find yourself immersed in the soothing serenity of the beach, leaving you with cherished memories for years to come. Let that sea breeze carry away your worries, sister! Embrace the art of doing nothing in the company of sun so you can return home with a renewed sense of relaxation.
