Belize is a welcoming, kind country that is incredibly diverse in its environments. With over 450 islands and nearly 50% of its land covered in tropical rainforest, there is truly something to discover each visit. I’ve been blessed to experience the Belize coast more than a handful of times – but have been forever intrigued by visiting the rainforest. The idea of a family adventure trip to a Belize jungle resort had long been on our bucket list.

The stars aligned for us in the late summer of 2023, so we kicked off my son Kai’s first trip to Belize in the jungle. Our experience staying in the heart of the rainforest at an incredibly gorgeous and thoughtful eco-friendly resort far exceeded anything we could have imagined.

Our Belize jungle resort stay was filled with family fun, adventure, exciting education and relaxation. We left with a deep awareness, refreshed wonders about Belize, and new motivation to protect our rainforests.

Introducing : Chaa Creek

Rewind to June of 2023. I was on a puddle jumper flight, heading to Belize City from Placencia. I sat next to a woman who was terrified to fly on the small plane. She and I struck up a conversation as she asked if she could hold my hand if she got nervous. Absolutely, I was her girl – I tried to distract her fears by asking about her trip.

Her family had just been to a Belize jungle resort called Chaa Creek in San Ignacio. I was instantly captivated by the wondrous place she described. She spoke of a world I had never experienced, but immediately yearned to.

Her stories of Chaa Creek were full of adventure and so much beauty. One quick puddle jump and I was sold (+ she was so brave on the flight!). I never would have guessed that only 3 months later, I would be on my way to experience Chaa Creek with my family.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CHAA CREEK’S JUNGLE SANCTUARY

Nestled deep within Belize’s vibrant jungles is Chaa Creek. It’s an award-winning luxurious eco-friendly haven that beckons nature enthusiasts, lovers, and families alike. To get a glimpse into the magic of the 400-acre nature reserve that is Chaa Creek, you must read its story

Founded by a couple deeply passionate about conservation and sustainability, it’s a romantic adventure tale of two lovers, The Flemings. Their profound love for nature is something they would go on to share with the world in the most precious way.

The resort is a testament to The Flemings’ unwavering commitment to preserving the beauty and biodiversity of Belize’s jungles. Chaa Creek simultaneously provides guests with a luxurious, eco-conscious retreat. Wildly civilized – you must visit to truly understand and experience it for yourself.

Tip : In preparation for your own trip to Chaa Creek, I recommend you explore their informative website. Kai is home-schooled and did this to kick off his research about what he wanted to learn about in Belize. It made the trip extra special.

How To Get To Chaa Creek

Most travelers arrive to Belize via Belize City. Surprisingly, Belize City is just a 2 1/2 hour flight from Houston! From there, you have several options including private shuttle, car rental, or helicopter ride. All transportation options allow you to experience the richness of Belize on your way to the rainforest. Embrace whichever transport you choose as part of the adventure.

We chose a private shuttle, booked through the resort. It’s a beautiful 2 hour drive out of Belize City, through the rolling farm lands and into the mountains.

Our driver made our experience incredible. He and Kai chatted the entire drive about what life is like in Belize. He told Kai stories of his parents experiences when Belize became independent. They chatted up how to get Amazon deliveries in Belize. He pointed out his daughter’s school. Kai learned so much from our sweet driver.

A Warm Welcome to Our Belize Jungle Resort

Pulling up into the jungle and onto Chaa Creek grounds is an experience that can’t be described in words. The beauty and tranquility that washes over one is a stunning welcome. I glanced back to Kai and Walt at one point – the awe on their faces is unforgettable.

We were greeted by the soothing symphony of jungle sounds and the warm embrace of the Chaa Creek staff. Freshly squeezed juices adorned with tropical fruits were handed to us at the bar. After a moment to take it all in, we were given a personalized tour of the grounds and our villa. Excitedly, we realized how much our expectations were about to be exceeded.

LuxurY Belize Accommodations Hugged By The Rainforest

Just a handful of luxurious villas are built throughout this Belize eco-friendly resort. Each villa is completely unique and designed with beautiful art, plants from the jungle and personalized touches. The textures and colors beckon. Welcoming home, the spacious villas extend lavish comfort accommodations for your jungle stay.

10% of all accommodation revenue at Chaa Creek goes directly into environmental and community projects.

We stayed in two different villas during out time at Chaa Creek.

Spa Villa

Perched upon a tropical hillside is the three bedroom, two bathroom Spa Villa complete with a spacious kitchen, dining room and glass-walled living space. Air conditioning and ceiling fans cool the heat of the day. No detail is forgotten.

Sitting on the Spa Villa’s wrap around veranda at any time of the day will instantly ground you. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the rainforest. Rise with the sun, enjoying panoramic views as the tropical birds (we saw so many, including toucans and parakeets!) and howler monkeys greet your family. At night, draw a bath in the outdoor jacuzzi to stargaze and wonder at the sounds of the rainforest.

Ix Chel Villa

Chaa Creek’s newest accommodations are the Ix Chel Villas.

Stunningly placed above the Macal River, the modern villas offer 180° views through floor to ceiling windows in each bedroom. Thoughtfully designed, each bedroom has its own massive bathroom with indoor-outdoor showers. A family gathering space for fun conversations and meals connect the two rooms. Air conditioning is present throughout.

Each Ix Chel Villa veranda has a private pool and hot tub, beckoning you to make new family memories. This is a space that could entertain all day. Time slows during a stay at the Ix Chel Villa. From the first light of sun rising above the Macal River, to the moment you close your eyes, peace immerses you.

DID I MENTION?! : Chaa Creek’s Ix Chel Villas come with a personal butler! Without skipping a beat, your butler will connect you requests, further nestling you into pure relaxation. He’ll be one step ahead of your every need, yet allow your family the complete privacy Ix Chel Villas offer. Our butler was kind enough to assist Kai and Walt with putting together a special birthday surprise dinner for me on the infinity pool deck, unforgettable.

Exploring The 400 Acre Belize Jungle REsort

Chaa Creek thoughtfully extends a wealth of amenities on their gorgeous 400 acres. We stayed on property the entire time other than a Mayan Ruins tour, and didn’t even experience a fraction of the property.

The centrally located salt water infinity pool is nestled within the lush tropical grounds. It beckons you against the heat of the day, the perfect spot for family fun or a cool dip before napping on a lounge chair.

The on-site Mariposa restaurant showcases Belize’s rich culinary history. Mariposa uses both food grown at the on-site farm and locally sourced ingredients in every dish. Special diets are welcomed and accommodated. The staff happily, thoughtfully and deliciously offered many choices for my vegan diet.

Captivating Activities That Naturally Educate

Resorts that offer educational experiences can often be a let down or frankly boring. Chaa Creek is an entirely different experience with thoughtful, exciting education weaved into every moment of your stay. The staff are experts at captivating through stories and experiences that invite you into their world.

Some of the on-site activities that we experienced and highly recommend are :

  • horseback riding tour though the rainforest
  • birdwatching tour
  • natural history museum tour
  • butterfly farm tour
  • RTV safari tour
  • canoe tour on the Macal River
  • organic farm tour
  • hands-on culinary experience

Tip : Balance your itinerary with fun educational experiences and free time to explore and relax. Building this time into your schedule is essential to take a step back from everyday life, and digest the wonder you’re immersed in.

Finding Serenity in The Belize Jungle

Amidst all the adventure, we cherished our tranquil moments together. The jungle’s profound serenity had a grounding effect on each of us.

As a family, we used the time to connect in love and laughter. Time moves at a slower pace in the jungle, EMBRACE it. Get present together, whether you’re horseback riding through the rainforest or lounging poolside.

As a mother, I personally found solace in early morning yoga flows and meditations throughout the day on the verandas. Stop a moment to notice the bird sounds and the wind through the trees. Take this time for you, to reconnect to your breath and peace. Allow moments sprinkled throughout family time to rejuvenate and reconnect.

Exemplary Staff and Unmatched Service

I couldn’t possibly pour my heart out about our experience at Chaa Creek without mentioning the Chaa Creek staff. Above and beyond doesn’t describe this team.

Second to none, each and every single staff member – no matter their role – deeply cares and offers the warmest embrace to guests.

The Chaa Creek staff’s passion for nature, love of the land and commitment to guest experience shone through every interaction. It speaks volumes to how the Fleming’s embrace each staff member as family.

Tip : If you’re lucky enough, you might catch members of the Fleming family at breakfast!

A Family Tradition in the Making

Our family’s experience at Chaa Creek was obviously nothing short of extraordinary. This is a place that has embedded itself deep within our hearts. I know it will continue to beckon us back, year after year.

As we said goodbye to Belize’s jungle paradise, we couldn’t help but dream of making this eco-friendly haven a cherished family tradition. It’s a place where we imagine reconnecting with nature, bonding as a family, creating lasting memories, and becoming better humans for generations to come.

Our first Belize jungle resort was not just a vacation destination; it was an unforgettable journey into the heart of an idealistic paradise. It’s a place that calls us back again, to explore, learn, rejuvenate and cherish the wonders of the Belizean jungle together.

Belize is a small country bursting with incredible diversity. From lush jungles to accessible islands and vibrant cultures – there’s no shortage of experiences waiting to be explored. Belize has over 450 islands (called cayes – pronounced “keys”). Alternatively, nearly half of its mainland is covered in rainforest! There is so much to explore.

What makes visiting Belize easy is its accessibility – my Getting Around Belize series covers the simple and fun ways to get to your destination. I highly encourage making your transportation part of the fun. Welcome to part 2 of Getting Around Belize!

Getting Around Belize : Water Taxi Adventures

Water taxis are a popular and efficient means of transportation between the mainland and cayes. These boats provide locals and tourists a convenient way to explore the country’s coastal wonders. They offer picturesque views on route to your final destination. How fun is it that you can enjoy the Caribbean Sea breeze as you head to your island adventure?!

Navigating The Tranquil Waters – Will I Get Seasick?

One remarkable aspect of Belize ferry travel is the soothing influence of the Belize Barrier Reef. As the second-largest barrier reef in the world, it acts as a natural breakwater, calming the often turbulent Caribbean Sea. This means that water taxi journeys are typically smooth sailing, making them a comfortable choice for travelers prone to seasickness.

The water taxis we’ve taken around Belize have been wonderful experiences. Walt tends to get motion sickness, but he didn’t because the waters were so calm. We do love to bring motion sickness relief bands with us when we travel, just in case.

Our Belize Water Taxi Adventures

There are several companies offering ferry boat service from Belize City to the various caye destinations like Caye Caulker and San Pedro. We chose San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi based on a recommendation, and had no complaints.

Getting From Belize International Airport To The Marina

Getting From Belize City International Airport to the marina takes about 25 minutes via taxi or private shuttle. Private shuttles can be reserved ahead of time. Alternatively, taxis are available directly in front of the airport.

The marina is very busy and can be intimidating. English speaking representatives are available to help you navigate. You’ll need to check luggage or cargo and get your printed ticket. Plan to arrive at the marina at least 30 minutes prior to your departure, if not sooner.

Note : Once you arrive at the marina, visit the ticket counter for printed tickets. Even reservations booked ahead of time must visit the ticket counter.

Water Taxi Costs & Schedule

Water taxis in Belize are the most affordable way to travel to your caye. One way tickets cost approximately $20-$30, while round trips cost $40-$60 (US).

Ferries are offered multiple times back and forth throughout the day between 6am and 6pm. San Pedro Express Belize Water Taxi offers a handful of trips each way, to each location daily.

What To Expect On Your Belize Water Taxi Journey

Get excited about getting around Belize via ferry boat! If you love the sea breeze and salty air, you’ll enjoy your water taxi as a preview to the fun. Below are some tips to make it the most enjoyable experience.

Arrive Early For The Best Seat : Socialize Or Soak Up the Sun

If you have a preference about where to sit on ferry, definitely arrive at the marina early. Especially if you are worried about getting seasick, you might have a strong preference about your seat location!

Seats along the parameter of the ferry and the upper deck offer the best coastal views. These seats also offer the least protection from the sun. Seats in the middle of the ferry are in rows, offering a chance to chat with others under the shade.

What To Pack For Your Water Taxi Ride

Space is limited on the ferry. If you’re traveling with luggage or cargo, it will be checked prior to boarding. Be sure to pack these items to carry on board with you :

Getting To San Pedro : Ambergris Caye Tropical Playground

The journey from Belize City to San Pedro is approximately 90 minutes. Just for perspective, a puddle jumper flight is approximately 15 minutes.

Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself in the lively town of San Pedro, where taxis are readily available. Check with your accommodations to see if they provide transport from the marina. If your hotel is downtown, you might be just a few minutes walk.

We traveled via water taxi from Caye Caulker to Ambergris Caye. The ferry took about 30-45 minutes.

Getting To Caye Caulker : A Slice Of Paradise

Traveling from Belize City to Caye Caulker typically takes around 45 minutes. Just for perspective, a puddle jumper flight is approximately 15 minutes.

Upon arrival, you’ll step into the heart of the South Side of Caye Caulker. Golf cart taxis are readily available for transportation to your hotel if needed. Some resorts offer small private water taxis from the marina to your final destination. Don’t miss stopping by Juicy for a fresh juice or smoothie before your return ferry, it’s right next to the marina!

Note : at the time of this writing, the Caye Caulker airport is closed for maintenance on the runway. Expected open date is late September, 2023. We took a water taxi versus puddle jumper because of the closure.

Getting Around Belize : Puddle Jumper Flight Delights

blonde-woman-in-tropical-outfit-getting-around-belize-on-tropic-air-flight

As travelers, we often focus on the destination, but in Belize, your journey can become part of the adventure! The main modes of transportation in Belize are puddle jumper flights, water taxis, bus, and automobile. You can choose your method of transportation based on how quickly you want to arrive at your destination, and the perspective you want to see.

Puddle jumpers are small planes that transport a handful of passengers on short flights. They’re very common in Belize (both domestic and international), used regularly to get from one destination to another.

Have you ever taken a puddle jumper flight? When planning how to get around Belize, we chose to fly, because we wanted to take in all of the views of the rainforest and Caribbean Sea! I have to admit, I was SUPER nervous about my first time on such a small plane.

The first time I flew on a puddle jumper flight in Belize was with some girlfriends. My husband and son couldn’t believe I was brave enough to board such a small plane! As soon as I was in the air, though, I knew that I had absolutely made the right choice. Our family has gone on to fly around Belize since. I’ll tell you all about the adventure, truly the best way to get around Belize!

Tropic Air: The Airline For The Ultimate Puddle Jumper Excursion

When it comes to experiencing such a beautiful country, Tropic Air takes getting around Belize to the next level. Their flights aren’t just a means of transportation; they’re a sweet adventure in themselves. Imagine soaring over Belize’s breathtaking landscapes, it’s the most magical perspective. We’ve flown Tropic Air for each of our flights and have had the most wonderful experiences.

The Cost Of Puddle Jumpers Flights In Belize

While taking a flight to your destination in Belize is more expensive than a water taxi or bus, it certainly gets you there faster with all the views. Flights seem to range from somewhere in the $50-$200 USD range.

Getting To Tropic Air At Belize International Airport

Tropic Air is located conveniently at Belize International Airport, where most tourists arrive in the country.

Image Via Tropic Air

  • Upon arrival, you’ll go through customs and get your luggage.
  • From there, you’ll walk up to the Tropic Air kiosk. A representative will confirm your tickets and answer any questions you have.
  • With your tickets in hand, you’ll head through a short security to get in the terminal.
woman-with-blue-nails-holding-tropic-air-ticket

The terminal area in Belize International Airport is small but busy. There’s only a handful of gates. You’ll find Tropic Air located at the far end – conveniently located across from Johnny’z Bar in the departure lounge! Upon arriving in the departure area, I highly recommend you tell the Tropic Air team you’re there, get changed into something fun and tropical – and grab a drink from Johnny’z to celebrate!

Above and Beyond: Tropic Air’s Exceptional Service

Tropic Air isn’t just about flying; it’s about taking care of travelers like family. We experienced this firsthand when my husband fell ill to food poisoning during one of our trips, from an off-resort restaurant we tried. Our flight was the next day but he still felt so ill.

The entire Tropic Air staff went above and beyond for us. The employee at the counter in Placencia noticed that he didn’t feel well and asked if he was ok. After we sat down, he came back over to us with the names of a few hospitals that he recommended. He also arranged to have a staff member drive us to the marina we were headed to, in case Walt needed to make a stop at the hospital. Once we arrived in Belize City, the staff member met us at the gate and carried all of our luggage. He was so friendly and helpful to us. Tropic Air took customer service to a whole new level. Their boutique, friendly service is truly exceptional. I had to share this experience with you, because we are absolutely fans for life!

Getting Around Belize: The Puddle Jumper Experience

Now, let’s talk about the exhilarating experience of flying in a small puddle jumper plane! These compact aircrafts offer an intimate connection with Belize’s natural beauty. Expect panoramic views that will leave you breathless.

What To Bring Onboard

At booking, you’ll choose your baggage configurations. These planes are small – even your carry on suitcase will be under your puddle jumper plane. You can bring a small carry on with you.

I recommend bringing a bottle of water on board with you. Definitely bring your camera or phone with video camera. You’ll want to capture every scenic moment from the air!

If you tend to get nauseous, you may want to speak with your health care team about a motion sickness treatment. My husband does tend to get motion sickness, but didn’t get nauseous at all, the flights were so smooth. We do love these motion sickness bands when we need them!

The Co-Pilot Seat: An Adventure Within an Adventure

Upon boarding your flight, you’ll notice just how small the plane really is. Staff will direct you where to sit – however I have two great recommendations for you!

blonde-woman-looking-out-window-in-copilot-seat-on-ouddle-jumper-flight

For the ultimate thrill, inquire about the co-pilot seat as soon as you arrive at the gate. If not yet taken, the co-pilot seat is a unique opportunity to sit beside the pilot! You’ll get to see the world from their perspective. To my surprise, staff asked if I’d like to sit there on my last flight in Belize. YES I answered immediately! Riding in the co-pilot seat was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Although every seat on Tropic Air offers perfect views, this took it to a whole new level.

three-happy-young-blonde-women-sitting-in-back-of-tropic-airplane

If you’re a part of a group of 3, or are taller and want more leg room, I recommend asking if the back seat is available. On the flights we flew, it’s the only full row on the plane, offers a lot more space and still has spectacular views.

three-womens-legs-in-back-of-tropic-air-puddle-jumper-flight-facing-cabin

The Belize Flight Experience

The thrill of feeling the engines roar to life, and ascending into the boundless Belizean skies is an experience unlike any other. It’s a reminder that the journey itself can be just as exhilarating as the destination.

As you peer out the window and watch the landscape transform beneath you, the sense of wonder grows with every passing minute. From the azure blue Caribbean Sea to the forests full of tropical foliage, treat your transportation around Belize as an excursion and enjoy! Tropic Air doesn’t merely transport you from one place to another; they share the heart of Belize’s natural beauty. Every flight is an unforgettable chapter of your Belizean adventure.

The flight itself is simple. I noticed that I felt take-off and landing much less than on a larger commercial airplane. I experienced a couple of flights with slight turbulence, but it was overall much smoother than a larger plane. Having water was important for me, as it does get stuffy on the smaller planes.

The Best Way To Get Around Belize : Where I’ve Traveled With Tropic Air

Tropic Air currently offers routes to 8 domestic and 5 international locations. We haven’t flown with them internationally yet, but are considering a flight to Cancun someday! I’ll continue to update this section as I experience new destinations via Tropic Air.

Getting to Placencia: Where Tranquility Meets Adventure

smiling-blonde-woman-with-bangs-holding-water-bottle-in-front-of-tropic-air-sign

The flight from Belize City to Placencia is 25-45 minutes (depending on if it’s non-stop). Just for perspective, it takes roughly 3-6 hours to drive or take a bus.

Once you land in Placencia, you’ll be amused by the cute airport and small baggage claim area. You’ll also be welcomed with open arms by the Tropic Air staff. Pre-arrange transport with your resort and they’ll pick you up right at the terminal!

The small airport operates a handful of flights a day, so you won’t need to sit at the airport for a long time on your return flight. Arriving 30 minutes prior to your flight will be more than enough time, but check with Tropic Air staff for their recommendation.

Getting to San Pedro : Ambergris Caye Tropical Playground

The flight from Belize City to San Pedro is roughly 15 minutes. Just for perspective, the water taxi is approximately 90 minutes (and the marina is located about 20-30 min taxi ride from Belize International Airport).

You’ll conveniently land in the bustling town of San Pedro. Taxis are readily available if your hotel doesn’t have transport. If your accommodations are downtown, you might be just a few minutes walk.

Getting to Caye Caulker : A Slice of Paradise

The flight from Belize City to Caye Caulker is roughly 15 minutes. Just for perspective, the water taxi is approximately 45 minutes (and the marina is located about 20-30 min taxi ride from Belize International Airport). Please note that at the time of this writing, the Caye Caulker airport is closed for maintenance on the runway. Expected open date is late September, 2023.

You’ll conveniently land in the heart of the South Side of Caye Caulker. Golf cart taxis are readily available if your hotel doesn’t have transport.

The Best Way To Get Around Belize : Your Uncharted Journey Awaits

From extraordinary customer service to unforgettable landscapes, Tropic Air will take your Belize adventure to new heights! Offering the quickest mode of transport with arguably the best views of gorgeous Belize, it’s pure fun to make this way of getting to your destination part of the adventure. Hope to see you on the next flight!

In this mini travel guide, we’ll unveil the allure of Belize’s most visited spot – San Pedro Belize, also known as Ambergris Caye Belize. From reaching its shores to discovering its hidden gems, let’s embark on an island adventure like no other. Welcome to Ambergris Caye!

Ambergris Caye or San Pedro: What’s The Difference?!

Ambergris Caye is often referred to as San Pedro. San Pedro is the only major town on the island. The two names “Ambergris Caye” and “San Pedro” have become interchangeable.

Ambergris Caye is actually located on the Yucatan Peninsula, connecting it to Mexico. It is considered a caye because of the Bacalar Chico. The Bacalar Chico is a 1500 year old Mayan canal, hand-dug to separate it from Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Getting to Ambergris Caye Belize: Embarking on Your Island Escape

The journey to Ambergris Caye is an exciting adventure in itself. For most, the trip starts with a flight into Belize City. The Philip S.W Goldson International Airport in Belize City a gateway to numerous stunning Belizean destinations. Most people wonder how to get from Belize City to Ambergris Caye once you’re in the country.

From Belize City, you can take a puddle hopper flight or a scenic water taxi ride directly to Ambergris Caye. Either the quick flight over turquoise waters or the leisurely cruise alongside the coast will set the tone for your tropical getaway.

blonde-woman-with-ponytail-and-white-shirt-looking-out-at-caribbean-sea-on-san-pedro-express-water-taxi

We traveled to Ambergris Caye from Caye Caulker via water taxi with San Pedro Belize Express. This water taxi from Caye Caulker was about 45 minutes. The water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro takes about 90 minutes.

Leaving San Pedro / Amergris Caye, we flew via Tropic Air to Belize City. That gorgeous flight is only about 15 minutes long.

Upon arrival at the San Pedro Marina or airport, you’ll be situated in busy downtown San Pedro. Coordinate pickup from the marina with your resort or hotel in advance, or you will find taxis abundant.

The Weather in Ambergris Caye and When to Visit

Ambergris Caye’s tropical climate promises warmth and sunshine year-round. From November to April, the peak tourist season boasts dry weather and comfortable temperatures. May to October marks the off-peak season, with occasional rain showers and lower prices.

During our July visit, overcast skies and light rain kept tropic temperatures comfortable, offering a less crowded yet still enjoyable experience. Consider visiting during the off-peak season for a unique perspective of the island’s beauty.

Navigating Ambergris Caye: Golf Carts and Bikes

There’s a certain charm to Ambergris Caye’s lack of vehicles. Although you’ll see less cars on Ambergris Caye than on Caye Caulker, you will notice some delivery trucks and taxis. The streets of San Pedro get busy. The favored modes of transportation are golf carts and bikes, allowing you to leisurely explore its hidden corners.

We chose to rent a golf cart on Ambergris Caye. The golf cart allowed us to explore a stretch of Belize’s longest island (about 25 miles). Arranged through our hotel, it was delivered directly to our accommodations. The golf cart made it easy to navigate both the busy streets of San Pedro and vast scapes of northern Ambergris Caye.

Note : on Ambergris Caye, the golf cart was delivered with hardly any gas. We were told to fill it up immediately. On Placencia, it was delivered full. Check your fuel levels before you head out with your rental for the first time!

Where to Stay: The Watermark’s Splendor

Nestled just north of San Pedro lies The Watermark Belize Hotel. The Watermark Belize Hotel is a brand-new hotel that beckons with its location and panoramic views.

blonde-woman-in-emerald-green-bathing-suit-in-blue-pool-at-the-watermark-belize-hotel

The Watermark Belize Hotel exudes luxury and comfort. Upon walking in for the first time, you’ll be immersed in a modern take on lavishness. Head to the rooftop pool immediately for stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and San Pedro. Spacious rooms with modern amenities will make your stay comfortable.

Possibly the best part of The Watermark Belize Hotel is its convenient location. Located just north of the Boca Del Rio Bridge, The Watermark Belize Hotel is accessible to the town – yet is separated enough that it ensures quiet comforts. Its location is central to all of the fun Ambergris Caye offers.

Where to Eat on Ambergris Caye: A Culinary Adventure

Ambergris Caye’s culinary scene mirrors its vibrant culture and tropical ambiance. There are so many incredible dining choices that you’ll no doubt leave with a bucket list longer than what you arrived with! Amidst an abundance of options, a few standout favorite restaurants during our short time visiting were :

blonde-woman-in-turquoise-dress-on-ocean-swing-at-cool-bean-cafe-ambergris-caye
  • The Sky View Restaurant at The Watermark Hotel Belize : grab a seat on the rooftop near the pool for stunning views and delicious food at sunset.
  • Cool Beans Cafe : the cutest little restaurant located on a dock on the water, Cool Beans Cafe offers fresh breakfast lunch and coffee. Really appreciated the abundance of vegan options! Cool Beans Cafe has an adorable swing overlooking the ocean.
  • Fueling Station near Secret Beach : ok, hear me out on this one! There’s one small fueling station near Secret Beach just as you’re driving in. They feature a tropical bar and their fresh coconuts were delicious! They’ll even create a blended alcoholic drink in the coconut for you. Bonus points for the comedy of getting a coconut at a fueling station!
  • The Truck Stop : Ambergris Caye’s first shipping container food park offers an abundance of delicious food choices. It’s a great choice when dining with a group looking for a variety of options.
  • Blue Water Grill : one of San Pedro’s most beloved restaurants comes with a view. Make a reservation for this beach-side restaurant as it gets busy.
  • Juice Dive : conveniently located near the marina and airport, Juice Dive is a great spot to grab a healthy bite on your way in or off the caye. We grabbed juices and wraps to enjoy on our journey back to Belize City. The food was fresh, offered so many vegan options and was delicious.

Must-Do Activities on Ambergris Caye

Like every other destination in Belize that we’ve visited – we left Ambergris Caye with a LONGER list of things to see and do than we started with! There is SO much to experience on Ambergris Caye. We had just two days on the island, and found some favorite experiences.

Witness The Sunrise And Sunset From A Rootop Patio

There’s water to the east and the west, so depending on your location during the day – you could catch both!

Sunrise

Wake with the sun and head to The Watermark Belize Hotel’s gorgeous rooftop patio to kick off the day. The rooftop boasts panoramic views and you can’t miss the sun rising over the calm waters.

Cool Beans Cafe is located directly on the water facing East. Catch an early breakfast at this favorite spot as you watch the rising sun.

husband-and-wifes-feet-at-sunset-over-water-san-pedro-belize

Sunset

Catch a pretty sunset at The Truck Stop where lounge chairs line the west facing docks.

Added to our bucket list, it was recommended to us several times to head to Rain Restaurant’s rooftop for stunning sunset views.

Explore Secret Beach

One of the island’s warm jokes is the “not-so-secret” – Secret Beach. In fact, you’ll be told to visit Secret Beach by anyone in the area you ask about what to do on Ambergris Caye! It’s become one of the top tourist destinations on the island. Don’t let its popularity deter you though, visiting Secret Beach is a fun right of passage for any Ambergris Caye Traveler.

With an abundance of beach clubs that feature bars, restaurants and fun water experiences – there’s a ton to choose from. Pick a spot that gives the vibes you’re craving and settle in. We grabbed a spot on the dock at Pirate’s Not So Secret Bar & Grill and loved the vibes!

Tip : Do watch for sea lice in the leeward waters of Secret Beach. We experienced some while we were visiting and although we didn’t have a reaction, we spoke to a man whose friend had a terrible reaction for weeks. Upon arrival, ask some locals if they are out. You an prevent an attack by applying vaseline to your skin before swimming.

San Pedro Guide provides a wonderful, thorough dive into everything you’ll need to know about Secret Beach.

Visit The Truck Stop For A Night Of Fun

blonde-woman-and-man-kissing-at-the-truck-stop-ambergris-caye-belize

The Truck Stop, located about a mile north of San Pedro, is Belize’s first shipping container food park. It’s a vibrant hub with something for everyone, a fantastic place to take the family for an evening of fun.

Choosing where to eat comes easy at The Truck Stop, offering a variety of choices with several food trucks, a beer garden and ice cream shop. I was able to find a delicious vegan Tofu Bahn Mi while my husband enjoyed local flavors.

The Truck Stop offers ever-changing entertainment. Their calendar is full of fun events happening daily. Between the swimming pool, 18 foot outdoor movie screen, outdoor game area, sunset views and live music – everyone in your group will look forward to this fun location!

Embrace Ambergris Caye Belize’s Magic

Ambergris Caye Belize invites you to embrace its enchanting beauty, vibrant streets, and delectable flavors. Whether watching the sunrise, spending the day at Secret Beach, or immersing yourself in San Pedro – your journey on this captivating island will be etched in your memory. As you bid farewell to Ambergris Caye, carry its spirit with you, eager to return and create more unforgettable memories on its welcoming shores.

Safe travels and island dreams await. xx, Jenny (The Kai Life)

Embarking on Your Journey to Paradise

Most travelers find it easiest to fly into Belize City. From there, you have several options to head to Caye Caulker.

When you arrive at the Caye Caulker Marina, you’ll be whisked away on a private boat to El Ben Cabañas (coordinate your arrival time in advance with the hotel). It’s a quick but gorgeous boat ride along the shoreline to your slice of paradise. Before you know it, you’ll be at your tropical Caye Caulker hotel.

A Warm Welcome and First Impressions

Arriving at El Ben Cabañas is a statement in itself. Once docked, you’ll walk into the oasis of a property. Walking the lush palm-lined brick path to reception will give a sneak peek. Upon check in, you’ll be handed a cool glass of freshly squeezed juice. As the staff delivers you luggage to your cabana, you’ll receive a property tour.

Thatch Roof Cabanas: A Slice of Paradise

Picture yourself in a thatch roof cabana during your vacation. El Ben Cabaña’s take on the traditional Belizean accommodations is a refresh. Tropical charm intertwines with modern luxury. Here, nature’s beauty is seamlessly woven into every detail. El Ben Cabañas are intimate spaces that blur the lines between indoor opulence and outdoor splendor.

At this Caye Caulker resort, no comfort is forgotten. The cabanas are private and spacious. Obviously the weather is hot in Belize – but each tropical cabana has air conditioning and fans to keep cool. Bathrooms are spacious and equipped with hot water spacious showers. Hermes toiletries are provided to stay refreshed. Each piece of furniture and linen is locally sourced from Belize designers and artisans. Wifi is located throughout the property.

Bask in Tropical Serenity At Your Belize Resort: El Ben Cabañas Refreshing Pools

Indulge in the luxury of choice as you soak in not one, but two inviting pools, each a cool oasis beneath the Belizean sun. The resort’s lush tropical foliage becomes your private garden of serenity, inviting you to explore, unwind, and rediscover the simple joys of life. You’ll find yourself wanting to stay all day in the cool blue waters on the pool deck. The pool bar, just steps away is an added treat.

A Sanctuary of Mangroves

Lining the shoreline is a living tapestry of protected mangroves, a reminder of the resort’s commitment to preserving the environment. Mangroves in Belize are under threat due to rapid development. In fact, about 20% of mainland mangroves in Belize are protected, while on the cayes, only 1% are under protection.

El Ben Cabañas has made a conscious effort to preserve the mangroves lining their property. Not only is it a nod to the importance they put on preservation, but it provides a gorgeous backdrop. Wander along the walkways, lost in the tranquility of the beautiful mangroves.

Exploring the Dual Charms of Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker extends two sides of the island – the vibrant energy of the south side and the serene tranquility of the north. The island is split in a natural mystery, possibly by Hurricane Hattie in the 1960s. Because the town is located on the south side, it’s bustling with energy.

tropical-palm-tree-at-caye-caulker-resort

With so many Caye Caulker hotels located on the south side, El Ben Cabañas is a sanctuary to the quiet north. After spending the day exploring town, you’ll love arriving home to your relaxing cabana. It’s truly the best location.

El Ben Cabañas makes it easy to access the entire island. Take advantage of their water taxi which regularly travels to the south side. Alternatively, their staff is happy to golf cart shuttle you to the Split to Split ferry.

Adventure Awaits: On Land and Water

Unleash your inner explorer with an array of island adventures. This Caye Caulker hotel makes it hard to leave their property! El Ben Cabañas offers kayak, paddle board, and bike rentals for guest use. Pedal along picturesque paths on a bike, glide through crystal-clear waters on a kayak, or stand atop a paddle board, the wind tousling your hair as you embrace the rhythm of the sea.

Savoring Moments: A Caye Caulker Resort Open Air Restaurant

The tropical ambience takes center stage at El Ben Cabañas open-air T&T Bar and Grill, where culinary delights are savored amid panoramic views. Don’t sleep on their delicious breakfast, complete with Belizean favorites like fry jacks or a pineapple mimosa.

Embrace the Tranquility of A Belize Resort : El Ben Cabañas

It’s easy to question where to stay in Caye Caulker Belize because there is an abundance of resorts. Then, add in the decision to stay on the quiet north side of the island, or busier south side. El Ben Cabañas makes your decision simple.

Are you planning a trip to Caye Caulker Belize or thinking about visiting?

Caye Caulker Belize (“Key Caw-ker”) is a vibrant little island with colorful buildings, friendly locals, and a unique charm that invites you to embrace the “go slow” lifestyle. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning Caribbean waters, the island offers a laidback escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Having been lucky enough to travel to Belize several times, I’ve really gotten to know the country. I’ve explored its lush rainforests and spent a lot of time on the cayes. After visiting Caye Caulker several times, I’m excited to share about what makes it unique to help you plan your own trip.

Short on time?
Here’s are a few of the best things around Caye Caulker :

Caye Caulker Belize Guide

Caye Caulker is one of those Caribbean islands that is unlike anywhere else. You’ll understand as soon as you step foot onto the island – life moves at a different pace here.

A wooden colorfully painted sign that says Caye Caulker

You’ll find brightly painted signs around the island.

Although it’s not the most wellness-focused destination I’ve visited, Caye Caulker still offers something for different types of travelers while keeping things relaxed.

This mini guide covers how to navigate the island, the best things to do and eat, where to stay, how to get around, information about the weather, and more. For wellness-focused travelers, I’ll share the healthy spots I found around the island.

About Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island off the northeast coast of Belize, nestled in the Caribbean Sea. Part of Belize’s Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – Caye Caulker gives access to some of the best diving in the world.

A emerald colored ocean with an island with brightly colored buildings and palm trees in the background.

Caye Caulker is full of brightly painted buildings on the waters edge.

Known for its vibrant culture, colorful buildings, and welcoming locals, Caye Caulker has a distinctly laid-back vibe that perfectly embodies the island’s motto: “Go Slow.”

The Split

The island is actually divided in two by an iconic channel that has a curious past! Some say that it was created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961, while others say The Split was man-made later on.

Regardless of how it was created, The Split is a must-hang spot when visiting.

bright-turquoise-adirondack-chair-overlooking-deep-azure-turquoise-sea-with-sailboat-in-the-background

The Split is a fun spot to hang out in between the Northside and Southside.

You’ll need to cross the channel if your hotel is up north, via the Split to Split ferry (you can also opt for water taxi provided by your resort). Most people don’t visit the north if they aren’t staying on that side of the island.

The Southside / Caye Caulker Village

The main town, Caye Caulker Village is located on the south. It’s where all of the action happens in town – restaurants, bars, shopping, events, and where most tours depart from.

A deep blue ocean in the foreground with a sleepy island with palm tres and scattered brightly colored buildings in the background.

The Southside of Caye Caulker, where Caye Caulker Village is located.

The south is absolutely busier than the north. It’s probably where you’ll end up spending most of your time during the day.

The Northside

The Northside of Caye Caulker is QUIET. Full of mangrove trees and home to the Caye Caulker Forest Reserve with a few scattered hotels and restaurants, you’ll find the north to be sleepy.

A speed boat in the ocean with the sun setting off to the side behindit

The Northside is the quieter part of Caye Caulker.

It’s a great option if you want to feel like you’re “coming home” to a quieter spot during your trip.

Tip : Both times I stayed on the north side of Caye Caulker (in July and September), I was absolutely devoured by mosquitos. Be sure to bring your bug spray!

How to get to Caye Caulker

Most travelers heading to Caye Caulker start their journey in Belize City at the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, the country international airport.

A building at the Belize International Airport that says Welcome To Belize in rainbow colors.

A friendly welcome at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

From there, you have two options to reach the island: a water taxi or a short island hopper flight. Both offer unique experiences and let you soak in the beauty of Belize from different perspectives.

It’s always fun to make your travel to the destination a part of the adventure, and truly both options totally do.

Water taxi from Belize City to Caye Caulker

The water taxi is a popular choice for its affordability and scenic ride through the Caribbean waters. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time (recommended), or you can grab them at the marina.

A boy in a brown baseball cap and white tee shirt looking out the back of a boat cruising through water with a tree colored island in the background.

The water taxi ride from Belize City to Caye Caulker.

You’ll need to take a 15-20 minute taxi or car service from the airport to get to the marina. It can be very busy and overwhelming, but there are people willing to help if you need assistance.

We traveled via water taxi for a couple our trips to the cayes, and loved how the breeze through our hair got us so excited to arrive. Because of the reefs, there aren’t huge swells in the water around Belize, it’s so calm. My husband tends to get seasick, but was completely fine on this water taxi!

Once you arrive at the Caye Caulker Marina, you’ll be situated downtown on the south side of the island. Coordinate pickup from the marina with your resort or hotel in advance. Golf cart taxis at the marina are also abundant to bring you to your accommodations.

Puddle Jumper Flight from Belize City to Caye Caulker

If you’re short on time, or want an aerial view of Belize’s stunning coastline, hop on a small island hopper plane for a quick and thrilling flight to the island.

A small white plane with maroon markings that says Tropic Air on it flying above a tropical jungle.

The island hopper planes are small but offer a birds eye view of Belize.

Traveling to Caye Caulker via plane is more convenient, as you’ll pick up your connecting flight directly at the international airport.

I really loved flying on the puddle jumpers in Belize. The small planes aren’t for the weak of heart, but offer the most incredible views of the cayes. It’s my favorite way to travel around Belize!

Coordinate your arrival time with your resort, or grab a golf cart taxi at the Caye Caulker airport.

How to get around Caye Caulker

At just five miles long and less than a mile wide, you can easily take in most of Caye Caulker during your trip.

There are no cars on the island! Golf carts, bicycles, ferries, water taxis and walking are the main modes of transportation, which totally adds to its relaxed atmosphere. Golf carts take the place of taxis and are available throughout the day around the island.

Three old pink and red bicycles with baskets linked up at a bike rack

A row of bikes for use at El Ben Cabanas Resort.

While we didn’t rent a golf cart on Caye Caulker, we saw a ton of them. We chose to rent bikes to leisurely explore the island’s beauty. Bike rentals are available throughout the island in shops & convenience stores for $5-$15/day. Biking around Caye Caulker was one of our favorite activities and a great way to get around.

The Split to Split Ferry

The Split to Split Ferry is easy to use – you simply just show up, and a local takes you across! If the ferry is on the opposite side of the split, wave them down and they’ll come to you. The ferry driver will take you to the other side for $2.50BZ / $5USD. If you’ve rented a bicycle, you’re welcome to bring it on the ferry with you.

Things to do in Caye Caulker Belize

Caye Caulker may be small, but it really offers a variety of activities to fill your days with exploration and adventure. From its vibrant local culture to the stunning turquoise waters that surround the island, there’s plenty to do.

Whether you’re snorkeling along the Belize Barrier Reef or hanging at The Split, Caye Caulker will encourage you to slow down and take it all in.

Below, are some favorite activities to help you make the most of your visit.

1. Catch a sunrise reef-side or at The Split

Start your day by catching a breathtaking sunrise, a simple yet unforgettable experience on the island. Head to the reef-side for a peaceful view as the sun casts its golden glow over the turquoise waters.

A long dock with a beautiful yellow and orange sunrise in a sky full of clouds in the background

Sunrise over Caye Caulker.

Locals and visitors say that The Split is a great place to catch the sunrise too, although I have yet to do this.

2. Feed the stingrays at sunset

For a unique and sweet experience, you must visit the Iguana Reef Inn for their stingray feeding. Just before sunset, make your way to Iguana Reef Inn’s shore to witness the feeding of stingrays in their natural aquarium.

A row of swimmers lined up against the edge of a calm ocean, with an ocean swing in the background

People gathering at dusk to watch the stingrays at Iguana Reef Inn.

Kids and adults alike line the waters as a member from the Iguana Reef Inn team feeds the stingrays, and they come right up to the shoreline. Dip your feet in and the stingrays will swim around them!

The pelicans will gather near as well, and they are so docile and cute.

It does get a bit crowded, so head over early and grab a drink or snack from the bar to support the hotel for this free offering.

Two pelicans sitting near the edge of the water, and one swimming near the edge.

3. Tour the island on bike

As one of the main modes of transportation on Caye Caulker, you can rent a bike throughout the island.

Grab your wheels and go explore – biking the island is a really fun way to get a lay of the land and see all that it offers. It’s a lot quicker, more fun, and cooler under the hot sun than walking.

Biking around Caye Caulker is a great way to take in the island.

4. Go snorkeling in Hol-Chan

Snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef — the second largest reef system in the world – is an incredible experience. Hol-Chan is a popular spot where you might be swimming with nurse sharks, black turtles, manta rays, parrotfish, trumpet fish, angelfish and colorful coral in these abundant waters.

5. Get grounded with morning open-air yoga

Unwind and rejuvenate at Namaste Café and Yoga Studio, the island’s only yoga studio. The open-air studio overlooks the tropical foliage and town.

Mats and blocks are provided and class is donation-based. Be sure to check their schedule before visiting, Namaste has an all-levels morning class or two daily.

After your practice, treat yourself to a delicious breakfast at Namaste’s café. Nourish your body with wholesome food and positive vibes in the three-story wellness haven. Stay awhile to enjoy views of the town as you plan your day.

Tip : As someone who infuses wellness throughout my life, I have to admit that Caye Caulker wasn’t the easiest destination to visit. It was difficult to find healthy food, but Namaste was my spot while visiting! Lean into this space if you’re health conscious and looking for fresh foods and movement.

6. Fly over the great blue hole

Seeing the Great Blue Hole – a assive underwater sinkhole surrounded by vibrant coral reefs – from above is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you in awe. Hop on a scenic flight with Tropic Air (our favorite Belize airline!) and soar over this world-famous natural wonder.

An aerial shot of a dark blue hole in the ocean with reefs surrounding it

The Great Blue Hole is a natural wonder and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From the air, you’ll get a breathtaking view of its perfect circular shape and the vibrant blues of the surrounding waters. The flight offers views of the Belize Barrier Reef and surrounding cayes along the way.

Whether you’re an adventure-seeker or simply looking to take in one of nature’s most iconic sights, flying over the Great Blue Hole is a bucket-list activity you’ll never forget.

7. Hang at The Lazy Lizard

Make a stop at Caye Caulker’s famous Lazy Lizard Bar and Grill for hanging at The Split and people watching. After walking up to the colorful sign that beckons you to join the fun, you’ll immediately feel like you’re a part of the party.

Red and orange brightly painted letters that say The Split

The Split is a fun place to hang out all day on Caye Caulker.

Take in the vitamin D from one of The Lazy Lizard’s many hang-out areas in or out of the water. Dance to the tropical Caribbean music, and experience the thrill of jumping off their platform into the crystal-clear ocean.

8. Stop by Caye Caulker’s colorful Shops

One of the first things you’ll notice after arriving on the island are the rows of colorful shops. There’s plenty of local goods to discover around town. Support local makers and bring home authentic souvenirs that capture the essence of Belize.

Where to Stay in Caye Caulker

Resorts and hotels on Caye Caulker Belize are abundant. No matter your style of accommodations, you’ll find something that adds to your island experience.

When deciding on your hotel or resort, take into consideration that the Northside of the island is very quiet and calming, whereas the Southside where the town is located is bustling. We loved staying on the northern part as an escape from the touristy side.

Two thatch hut roof homes with red fencing surrounded by tropical trees

📍 Our Favorite Northside Option : For a truly tropical cabana experience, the quiet North Side of Caye Caulker is a serene haven at El Ben Cabanas.

Nestled along the protected mangrove lined shoreline, the thatch roof cabanas provide the perfect escape from the daily hustle. Walking through the property, you’ll be immersed in tropical gardens that beckon you to stay awhile.

El Ben Cabanas offer both tranquility and proximity to the island’s vibrant attractions. They have a ferry that takes their guests to the Southside and back throughout the day.

📍 Budget Option : The Caye Caulker Plaza Hotel is located downtown in the middle of town. With rooftop views and wifi throughout, this is a great budget option.

📍 Mid-Range Option : Located near The Split, Barefoot Caye Caulker Hotel will put you right in the action while giving you a place to retreat. Their beautiful private pool is the perfect place to take a dip after a day in the sand.

📍 Family Option : Stay on the Northside at BluZen for beautiful, modern, new apartment-style accommodations and a fun infinity pool.

BluZen is a great spot on the quiet Northside for families or friends traveling together.

Where to eat in Caye Caulker : Healthy Options

You’ll find a ton of restaurants throughout Caye Caulker, especially on The Southside. Locally owned restaurants are everywhere you turn – and Belizeans are proud of their food and hospitality.

Brightly colored painted wooden signs on a tropical tree trunk that say sun rise, ginger energy boost, ice tea, milk shakes

Juicy has a cute picnic area and brightly colored inviting signs all around the space.

I’m plant based and Caye Caulker was one of the more difficult destinations for me to easily find food in Belize. Below are the restaurants that I was able to eat at:

  • Juicy – for refreshing smoothies, fresh juices and happy vibes, Juicy is the spot. You’ll immediately feel at home with the colorful welcoming signs. There are picnic tables in front, near the ocean.
  • Hibisca by Habanero for dinner and music – on our first night on Caye Caulker, we were drawn to Hibisca because of the live singer & guitarist. As soon as we saw the variety in the menu, we grabbed seats. They offer delicious plant based options that I could enjoy and were so happy to help explain what could be made vegan.
  • Namaste Café – before or after a yoga class, grab a bite at Namaste Café. Their menu offers and abundance of fresh fruits & veggies, juices and more. Grab breakfast, lunch or coffee.

Caye Caulker Weather

With its tropical climate, Caye Caulker enjoys a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The average temperature hovers around 80°F (27°C). While the weather is generally warm and inviting, Belize does experience distinct wet and dry seasons.

White sand with palm tree shadows, brightly colored boats and lounge chairs lining the edge of the calm water with palm trees scattered about and a dock with sailboats in the background.

Caye Caulker is a great place to catch the sunshine.

The dry season, from late November to May, is the most popular time to visit, offering sunny days and minimal rainfall—perfect for outdoor adventures and exploring.

The wet season, from June to early November, brings more frequent rain, often in short bursts, and higher humidity. Despite the rain, the wet season can still be a great time to visit, with lush green landscapes and fewer crowds.

We’ve visited in late summer and early fall and had great weather each time!

Hurricane season in Caye Caulker

Hurricane season in Belize runs from June through November. While hurricanes are relatively rare, they can impact travel plans, especially between August and October when storm activity tends to peak.

If you’re traveling during hurricane season, consider travel insurance and keep an eye on updates from local authorities. Most hotels and tour operators are well-prepared and have safety protocols in place to ensure your experience is as smooth as possible, even if the weather takes a turn.Have You Been To Caye Caulker, Belize?

Best Time to Visit Caye Caulker Belize

The best time to visit Caye Caulker depends on what you’re looking for – crowds, weather, and costs can vary greatly throughout the year. Here’s a breakdown of the island’s seasons to help you decide when to plan your trip.

Peak Season (December to April)

The dry season in Belize is the most popular time to visit Caye Caulker. You can expect sunny days, cooler breezes, and minimal rain—perfect for outdoor adventures like snorkeling or sunset cruises.

However, with perfect weather comes higher prices and larger crowds, especially around the holidays and spring break. If you’re visiting during peak season, be sure to book accommodations and tours well in advance.

Off-Season (June to October)

The off-season aligns with Belize’s wet season and hurricane season. While the weather can be unpredictable with occasional heavy rain or storms, this is also when the island is at its quietest and greenest. If you’re willing to take the risk, you’ll find fewer tourists, lower prices, and a slower pace. It’s a great time for budget-conscious travelers or those seeking a tranquil escape.

Tip : In September, Belize is really quiet. You’ll find much cheaper prices before the holiday season kicks in!

Shoulder Season (May and November)

For the best of both worlds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. May and November offer a sweet spot between the dry and wet seasons, with fewer crowds, more affordable prices, and relatively pleasant weather. You might experience occasional rain showers, but overall, it’s a fantastic time to enjoy the island with a more relaxed vibe.

What language is spoken in Caye Caulker

English is the official language of Belize, and it’s predominantly spoken on Caye Caulker, making it easy for travelers (especially Americans) to communicate and navigate the island. Whether you’re chatting with friendly locals or ordering at a beachside restaurant, you’ll find that English is widely understood and used.

However, Belize is a beautifully diverse country, and you may also hear Kriol (Belizean Creole), the native language spoken by many locals. Kriol reflects the island’s rich culture and history, and its rhythmic tone adds to the unique charm of Caye Caulker. Don’t hesitate to ask a local about Kriol—they’re often more than happy to share a phrase or two with curious visitors!

How to pay in Caye Caulker

In Caye Caulker Belize, the local currency is the Belize Dollar (BZD), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted across the island, making it easy for travelers (especially Americans) to handle payments.

A pile of BZN bills and coins.

Be sure to bring small bills as you’ll most likely receive change back in BZD.

The exchange rate couldn’t be more straightforward: 1 USD equals 2 BZD. Be sure to carry smaller denominations of cash, as change is mostly given in Belize Dollars.

While many restaurants, shops, and tour operators accept credit cards, it’s worth noting that smaller businesses and street vendors may only take cash. ATMs are available on the island, but they can occasionally run out of cash, especially during peak season, so it’s wise to plan ahead and bring some cash with you.

FAQs

Having spent so much time exploring Caye Caulker and Belize, I know what visitors can expect. Here are answers to a few common questions I’m often asked.

Where is Caye Caulker located?

Caye Caulker is a small island in the Caribbean Sea, just off the coast of Belize.

It’s part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sits about 20 miles northeast of Belize City.

The island is easily accessible by ferry or a short flight, making it a convenient yet tranquil escape for travelers.

Is Caye Caulker Expensive?

Caye Caulker can be as budget-friendly or as luxurious as you make it.

While prices are generally lower than in larger tourist hubs like Ambergris Caye, costs can add up for accommodations and activities like snorkeling or sailing.

Affordable options like local eateries and guesthouses make it possible to enjoy the island without breaking the bank.

Is Caye Caulker safe?

Caye Caulker is considered a very safe and welcoming destination for travelers.

Violent crime is rare on the island, and most visitors feel comfortable exploring on foot, day or night. With any destination though, it’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions.

Petty theft can occur, especially in tourist areas, so keep an eye on your belongings and avoid leaving valuables unattended on the beach or in golf carts.

Does Caye Caulker have good beaches?

Caye Caulker isn’t known for its traditional sandy beaches, and as a beach lover, I was disappointed in the “beaches”. Much of the shoreline is rocky or covered with seagrass. There really isn’t a true beach with waves and sandy shores.

Can you drink the water in Caye Caulker?

Tap water in Caye Caulker is generally not recommended for drinking. Most accommodations and restaurants provide purified water, and bottled water is widely available on the island.

Final Thoughts : Caye Caulker Belize

Caye Caulker is a vibrant and friendly Belize island destination that’s easy for Americans to visit. As a hub for the Belize Barrier Reef, there’s an abundance of once in a lifetime things to do.

As someone who involves wellness in every aspect of my life including travels, I didn’t find Caye Caulker the easiest to visit. It was difficult to find vegan food and healthy activities. But the people were so nice and I really appreciated the island life.

I hope this guide inspires your trip and helps you to put together the best Caye Caulker itinerary. Enjoy every moment, and remember to go slow!

My husband and I try to take a trip together yearly (at least!).  Vacationing as a couple is such a rare treat when you have a family. We find that it keeps our relationship fresh and fun, inspiring us to return home even more excited on our journey of parenthood together.  It always reminds me of the first time we traveled as a couple, and brings back feelings of dating again.  Obviously, getting time alone when you have a family is easier said than done. It’s wonderful if you can figure it out!

Although it’s not always easy to decide on the perfect destination for time away together, it was simple for us this trip.  After visiting Placencia, Belize for the first time with girlfriends a month prior, I couldn’t wait to introduce the area to Walt.  It came as a surprise that we were able to head back to Belize as soon as we did! But my Belize mini-series quickly developed – we just had to choose our resort. I was hopeful to find a really special location.

There are many Placencia resorts to choose from, something for everyone.  However, as soon as I stumbled upon Azure Del Mar, I knew that we had to experience the Maya Beach paradise as a couple. I’m so thrilled to introduce Azure Del Mar to you.

Arriving in Paradise: A Welcoming Oasis

Although traveling to Placencia is a bit of a journey, make your travel part of the fun and adventure!  Most travelers find it easiest to fly into Belize City.  From there, you have several options to head to Placencia.

As you step off the plane at the intimate Placencia Airport, the first taste of the Azure Del Mar experience begins. With a seamless and joyful pick-up service (upon request), they ensure that your journey is as stress-free as your stay. We were thrilled with the excitement that our kind driver showed to us. He gave us a mini tour and told us some history on the 15 minute drive to Maya Beach.  The next day, he hand-delivered a note with recommendations on how to spend a day on the Caye we were traveling to next!

Stepping Onto Azure Del Mar

Upon arriving at these Belize beachfront cabanas, you’ll step into a true oasis. The beauty of this haven is accentuated by its lush tropical surroundings. It’s a sanctuary, where the symphony of the waves harmonizes with the rustling foliage.  Unquestionably, you’ll immediately notice a feeling of calmness and welcoming as soon as you step on the property.

When you walk into the open-air reception lounge, you’ll be greeted with fresh tropical juice and a warm smile.  It’s obvious that the staff truly cares that your every need is met. They go above and beyond, making sure that you have the most incredible time at this Caribbean beachfront resort gem.

The level of genuine welcoming that the staff provides throughout your time as their guest is second to none.  For example, after getting a personal tour of the property, we sat down at the restaurant for a bite. Our waiter said he was excited to spend the next few days with us and wanted to introduce himself as a friendly face. The little things go such a long way.

I’m plant-based and my husband is not. It’s important to us that we dine in restaurants that support both of our eating preferences. We each loved the delicious menu offerings throughout breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner.  As well, the full bar on-site makes delicious alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks alike. Don’t sleep on the dirty banana!

Central To The Fun

Azure Del Mar is located in Maya Beach, just 7 miles north of Placencia Village on the Placencia Peninsula. It’s location is sweetly removed, yet nearby destinations are perfectly accessible.  The resort’s shuttle heads to town upon request. Alternatively, renting a golf cart to bounce around town is fun and convenient.

With its boutique Placencia cabana charm, Azure Del Mar is a place where you don’t merely stay; you connect. Connect with nature, with the sea, with each other and with yourself. Whether you’re swaying in a hammock beneath the palms, or simply gazing at the horizon from your cabana, every instant feels like a gift.

Welcome to the enchanting Placencia, Belize!  Placencia is a sweet slice of Caribbean paradise that beckons with its calm beaches, vibrant culture, rich history and endless adventures around the surrounding Belize Barrier Reef. In this mini travel guide, we’ll unravel the treasures of Placencia, from reaching this haven to savoring cherished experiences during your vacation in Belize. Prepare to be captivated by the essence of this charming destination.

I traveled to Placencia for the first time in the summer of 2023 for a girls trip and that quickly sparked my Belize series. I returned with my husband to embrace more time in this sparkling gem of a country about a month later.  During my time in Belize, I was drawn to the welcoming, kind Belizean people that were overjoyed to share their country with me. Also, there are over 450 islands in Belize, and over half of the country consists of subtropical jungle or rainforest – traveling here taught me that there is SO much more to discover.

Getting To Placencia, Belize : Your Journey Begins

Half the fun is in your journey to Placencia, it’s truly an exhilarating experience in itself! Most travelers arrive via Belize City, where your gateway to paradise awaits. From there, several options await, all allowing you to experience the richness of this country on your way.

blonde-woman-in-tropical-outfit-looking-out-window-of-tropic-airlines-plane-flying-into-placencia-belize

Transportation to touristy spots from the Philip S.W Goldson International Airport is abundant. With so many options, you can truly make your travel on to Placencia part of the fun. Choose from various options to reach Placencia :

  • Bus ($7-$15), approximately 5 hours
  • Water Taxi + Bus ($35-$75), approximately 4.5 hours
  • Rent A Vehicle (varies), approximately 3.5 hours
  • Take a puddle hopper flight ($125-$260), approximately 45 min

We chose to fly on a puddle hopper with Tropic Air and I can’t recommend this enough. After checking in with Tropic Air, grab a yummy tropical drink to kick off your Belize vacation as you wait for your flight! Soon you’ll be cruising out of the bustling city and enjoying views of the turquoise Caribbean sea. The quick flight down the coast offers stunning views. You might even get lucky enough to sit in the co-pilot seat! (Pro Tip : when you’re waiting to board your Placencia flight, ask if this seat is available.)

Navigating Placencia: The Golf Cart Experience

happy-married-couple-on-golf-cart-rental-in-placencia-belize

Get a vehicle in Placencia, unless you decide to stay in town entirely and your resort provides airport transportation. Especially if you’re on the outskirts of downtown, you’ll absolutely want a vehicle – exploring the peninsula is a breeze, thanks to the allowance of golf carts on its roads.

We rented a golf cart directly from Captain Jak’s. They conveniently dropped off and picked up at our resort. Driving down the Placencia peninsula (say that 10 times fast!) was such a fun adventure each time we headed out in our open air vehicle. This affordable mode of transportation not only adds a touch of adventure and romance, but also provides the freedom to explore at your pace.

Stay At A Maya Beach Oasis

beach-cabanas-with-hatch-roofs-at-azure-del-mar-on-maya-beach-in-placencia-belize

There are so many gorgeous Placencia resorts to choose from. Make your stay a dream by choosing Azure Del Mar, the boutique Maya Beach hotel where private beach cabanas become your haven.

Do you remember your favorite night of sleep ever? I didn’t until my first night at Azure Del Mar! I’ll never forget falling asleep to the gentle waves and sea breeze on my first night, it was so incredibly healing and relaxing. Azure Del Mar is a treasure you’ll want to return to again and again.

Nestled along the Maya Beach shoreline, their boutique accommodations provide a blend of blissful comfort and natural beauty, ensuring a serene retreat after your daily escapades. The friendly staff and sandy property will encourage you to kick off your shoes and pause time while visiting. Walk through their tropical gardens, lounge by the pool or oceanside on a beach hammock. You could absolutely spend the entire day at Azure Del Mar.

Embracing the Dawn: Sunrise at Maya Beach

smiling-blonde-woman-in-bathing-suit-on-beach-swing-in-placencia-belize

Start your day by witnessing the breathtaking sunrise at Maya Beach. Full disclosure – I’m not a morning person, but will wake early for a beach sunrise, and have to say that catching the Belizean sun rise during your stay is a must.

Sunrise in Placencia is between 5:30am-6:30am depending on the time of year. Azure Del Mar’s beach swing, lounge chairs, hammocks and dock offer the perfect vantage points to marvel at the rising sun, casting its golden glow upon the tranquil waters. Afterwards, walk through the soft sand towards their Reef Restaurant for a delicious Belizean breakfast.

Sidewalk Strolls: A Guinness World Record Adventure

blonde-woman-walking-down-the-sidewalk-narrowest-street-in-the-world-in-placencia-belize

Immerse yourself in this town’s unique charm by strolling the Placencia Sidewalk – the world’s narrowest street, as recognized by the Guinness World Records. At just over 4,000 feet long and measuring only 4 feet wide, it’s open to pedestrians only.

The Placencia Sidewalk is a must for shoppers and explorers alike. Find one of a kind gifts and simple treats to take a slice of Belize home with you. This charming street is adorned with tropical flowers and lined by boutiques, cafes, live music and local vendors.

Placencia Beach Club: An Afternoon of Bliss

For a joyous afternoon, spend a few hours under the palm trees at the Placencia Beach Club. With a range of affordable day rate options and an array of amenities, including beachfront access, pools, games, delicious food and tropical drinks, this spot on the beach gives pure joy.

tropical-pool-at-placencia-beach-club-in-placencia-belize

Y’all, I’ll be honest, at first the Placencia Beach Club had me at “swim up bar”, and although this is the best seat in the house, their entire menu of offerings is so much fun. Their spot along the Caribbean Sea is one of a kind.

Surprisingly, you can enjoy the beach club for just $10BZD / $5USD (learn more about currency in Belize here), which gets you a pool and beach access + a towel. However, if you’re planning on staying awhile, consider an all inclusive day pass (all you can eat and drink, some exclusions apply) for $100BZD / $50USD. Their menu is delicious and includes plant based options. Ask for a couple of coconuts and they’ll climb a palm tree to chop them down if they’re out!

A Culinary Wonder: Savoring Placencia’s Flavors

Savoring culinary delights during a trip to Placencia, Belize is a must. From the fresh fruit stands (my girlfriends and I were able to get about 5 pounds of fruit for under $10BZD!) to the other delectable creations, your taste buds are in for a treat.

Most people are excited to try fresh catches from the abundance of restaurants lining the Placencia Village. Contrarily, I’m plant based in my eating and was thrilled to find options I could fall in love with at every spot we tried. Some favorites include :

  • Enjoy a spicy orange jalapeno margarita on the RumFish patio and don’t pass on their menu
  • Dine under thousands of brightly colored flowers at Omar’s
  • Kick off your day with a smoothie or fresh juice from Cloud 9
  • Enjoy wave-side dinner at The Reef Restaurant at Azure Del Mar, where people come just for the food and ambience
  • Sit on the roof at Muna with a mojito in hand and fresh salad in front of you
  • Grab some coconuts from a fruit stand or the Placencia Beach Club to cool off on a hot afternoon

Chasing Sunsets on Sunrise Blvd

Fellow sunset lovers, take note! Despite Placencia not being known for its sunsets, the lagoon side offers a quiet spot to watch the day close out under a painted sky.

Located behind the soccer field, Sunset Pointe is a sleepy lagoon that offers the perfect view to watch the sun dip below the horizon. As the bright rays disappear, stay a little longer to watch the fish jump.

Placencia Bucket List

There is so much to be discovered in Placencia – I found that I wasn’t able to get to nearly all of the wonders I want to experience. Bucket list items for the next trip include :

  • Take a sunset cruise
  • Snorkel on the Belize Barrier Reef
  • Kayak Laughing Bird Caye
  • Visit the Mayan Temples
  • Visit Monkey River Jungle Tour
  • HIke Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Visit Bocawina National Park
  • See a tucan and scarlet macaw

Placencia, Belize is a wonderful place to discover the beauty and charm of this Caribbean country. The delectable flavors, narrow shop-lined streets, warm culture and serene beachfronts will welcome you with open arms on your Belize vacation. Pack your curiosity and leave your worries behind, let Placencia’s beautiful people and lifestyle embrace you. Fully enjoy your Placencia, Belize vacation – just be warned that you’ll want to return again and again!

Join my husband and I on a journey to three of Belize’s most enchanting locations – Placencia, Caye Caulker, and Ambergris Caye – where love, relaxation and wellness intertwine in the tropics.

Time is so precious anymore, and life flies especially fast when you’re a couple with a kiddo and both have busy careers! Amongst all of the family, work and life stuff – we love to take a week together for just the two of us yearly to hangout, decompress and date a little bit again.

As a beach loving couple, we’re always excited when our time together lands us on the sunny shores (ok, full truth – we seek this out 99% of the time!). This summer we knew that we wanted to experience a special tropical destination together. We wanted it to be easily accessible from the US. That’s how we landed in the Caribbean’s vibrant, sunny Belize!

The Vibes in Belize

Belize embraces travelers with its smiling, welcoming vibes. It’s easy to fall in love with this tropical paradise for a dreamy Caribbean escape.

Every person we met and interacted with in Belize was incredibly friendly and willing to offer recommendations or assistance. This created one of the warmest atmospheres we’ve experienced traveling. Asking questions is met with eager and friendly responses. There are happy signs hung all throughout the country, with reminders like “be kind”, “go slow”, and “leave no trace”.

The locals exude a chill and super friendly demeanor, allowing you to explore at your own pace. This adds to the relaxed ambiance of a breezy trip to the Caribbean. Many times when we’ve traveled to other places, we’ve felt like we were being pushed to purchase something, or there was another agenda – but this wasn’t the case for us in Belize, at all!

Getting Around In Belize

We actually visited 3 destinations on our trip to Belize over the course of 6 days!

There are over 450 islands in this Caribbean gem, and over half of the country consists of subtropical jungle or rainforest. Transportation to touristy spots is abundant, making it really common to check out a few areas during one visit. The only difficult part is picking which area in Belize to visit!

The accessible puddle hopper airlines, like Tropic Air, and water taxis throughout the cayes offer regular schedules and breathtaking views. It’s so simple and fun to bounce around Belize. While buses are available and offer a chance to sightsee from the ground, we opted for Tropic Air and water taxis to maximize our time in each location during our trip to the Caribbean. We were mesmerized by the aerial views of the beautiful country.

I even spotted a mama and baby manatee on a flight, and got to be co-pilot (ok, in all honesty, I was just allowed to sit in the seat haha!) on another flight.

If you’re planing to visit a few locations like we did, I highly recommend using Tropic Air. The San Pedro Express Water Taxi system is excellent for inter-island travel. If you’re moving destinations during your trip to Belize, focus on how fun it is to see the country from the air and the sea, making it a part of your trip – before you know it, you’ll be walking into your next villa!

It’s easy to travel to Belize as an American

As Americans, traveling to Belize is incredibly convenient. It’s located in the central time zone and is just a couple of hours flight from Dallas. It couldn’t be easier to communicate or use money in Belize.

Language

English is the official language of Belize and communication with locals is hassle-free. Most of the population also speaks a creole patois and are bilingual. The locals are happy to speak to you in English and all of the signage and menus we read were written in English, simplifying navigation.

How To Pay In Belize

The official currency is the Belize dollar, but the exchange rate is Bz$2 to US$1 (2:1 exchange). The US dollar is used regularly, and both currencies are used interchangeably. It is easy to use US dollars throughout Belize without the need to exchange money (or pay expensive change rates) beforehand.

When you pay with cash in US dollar, you’ll be given your change in Belize dollars. This is great to use for tips, or other places you’re using cash. Just a note about using cash – US coins are not accepted in Belize. You’ll find ATM’s throughout the touristy areas in Belize.

We found that Visa and MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted (Discover and Amex less so). This made payments effortless and allowed us to earn more travel points as we traveled (my favorite way to earn rewards!) with our Chase Sapphire card. We stayed in the touristy spots, and found that there were only two places on our trip which accepted cash only.

Tipping is a simple process in Belize. While appreciated, it is not mandatory. People tip an average of 10%. You’ll want to tip closer to 20% for exceptional service. I’ve traveled to other countries and have felt that I need to tip EVERYONE, even if I’m just asking for directions or assistance – this is not the case in Belize, or a feeling that you will get at all.

Eating And Drinking In Belize

As a plant-based person, I was pleasantly thrilled to find delicious vegan food options throughout Placencia, Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye Belize, while my husband enjoyed a variety of non-vegan dishes. The fruits in Belize are out of this world, providing fresh breakfasts each morning on our holiday in Belize. We highly recommend you stop by a fruit stand for a mango or pineapple (don’t sleep on drinking from a coconut together to cool down a hot afternoon!).

It’s NOT recommended that you drink the water in Belize. All of the resorts that we stayed in and restaurants we ate at served filtered water and ice cubes. I used the UVBrite Self Cleaning Water Bottle for the first time during this trip and absolutely loved it.

The Trip : Our Romantic Belize Getaway Agenda

We had six days away together and wanted to see a few areas in Belize while still relaxing. We chose to spend two nights in each destination, and although we would have loved more time, this little trip around such a beautiful Caribbean country was the perfect itinerary.

Placencia: Where Time Slows Down

We spent the first part of our special Caribbean trip in Placencia. Placencia is a charming coastal village along the Caribbean Sea and towards the southern end of Belize. Time slows down here. We fully embraced the relaxed vibes of Placencia’s coastal paradise. Placencia is a quick 30-45 min puddle hopper flight from Belize City.

During our time in Placencia, we stayed at Maya Beach’s gorgeous Azure Del Mar, a warm and inviting boutique property offering beachfront villas and a plethora of amenities. We cherished getting lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves and waking early with the sun to watch it rise. We loved enjoying the sun’s gentle rays from the dock and abundance of hammocks and lounge chairs on Azure Del Mar’s beach. Grab a spot on the ocean swing to watch the sun say good morning before a delicious breakfast at their restaurant, The Reef.

Get a vehicle to skip about Placencia. Azure Del Mar does offer transportation into town, but Placencia a great place to have a little vehicle in. We had so much fun with our rented golf cart. Although there are plenty of cars on Placencia, it’s just as common to see golf carts on the road. It made our travel back and forth to town a joyous experience each time! We rented our golf cart from Captain Jak’s, and they made it super convenient for us by dropping it/picking it up directly at our hotel.

We had fun strolling along and shopping on the Placencia Sidewalk (the narrowest street in the world at 4 feet wide, according to the Guinness World Book of Records). We also spent an afternoon at the Placencia Beach Club – I love their swim up bar, and they’ve got some fantastic food!

Caye Caulker: Embracing the Island Life

Our romantic Caribbean getaway continued to the idyllic island of Caye Caulker, where we discovered an island offering something for everyone. From Placencia, we flew to Belize City and took a water taxi to Caye Caulker (the Caye Caulker airport is currently closed to remodel the runway through September 2023). Caye Caulker is located about 45 minutes north of Belize City by boat.

When researching Caye Caulker, you’ll immediately learn about “the split”. In 1961, Hurricane Hattie split Caye Caulker in two, creating the north side and the south side. All you need to know about the split is :

  • the north side of the split is quiet and relaxing
  • the south side of the split is bustling and full of life, where the town is located
  • it’s really fun to hang out at the split
  • there’s a water taxi called “split to split” that travels back and forth between the sides regularly. You just wave it down and they’ll come pick you up!

We chose to stay on the North Side of the split, to truly relax and remove ourselves from busy life for a bit. We stayed at the serene El Ben Cabanas because of their gorgeous tropical thatch hut cabanas, and loved every moment of our stay here. El Ben Cabanas is a calm and quiet resort offering the perfect balance of relaxation and exploration. They have a private dock and a boat which will pick you up directly at the Caye Caulker Marina. Their property is a lush island paradise full of palm trees and other tropical plants. We loved the feeling of “going home” after we were done exploring town on the south side.

During our time on Caye Caulker, we rented bikes from El Ben Cabanas for $5 USD/day and explored the sandy paths on the north side (I totally spotted a gorgeous rainbow on my birthday!). The split to split even allows you to bring your bike on board, making it easy to continue exploring when you hop over to the south side!

A highlight of our time on Caye Caulker was taking an open-air yoga class at Namaste Cafe, the island’s only yoga studio. After the relaxing session, we had a fresh breakfast in their restaurant, savoring the tropical flavors and refueling for the day’s adventures.

It was also fun hanging at the Lazy Lizard (at the split) to catch some rays and a couple of drinks. I even worked up the courage to leap off of the Lazy Lizard’s famous diving platform (to be 100% honest, it took me 5 tries!). Walt did it immediately on the first try! To end the day, we arrived at Iguana Reef just before sunset during feeding time for the stingrays and loved seeing them gather. The stingray feeding is a sweet moment not to be missed.

Ambergris Caye: A Tropical Escape with a Touch of Luxury

Our final destination, Ambergris Caye, was a treat for the senses during our vacation in Belize. Getting to Ambergris Caye from Caye Caulker is an easy 30 min water taxi ride, a fantastic way to ease further into island life.

We stayed just north of the bustling town of San Pedro at the luxurious, brand new The Watermark, offering us easy access to all that Ambergris Caye had to offer. The location of this hotel is perfect as the city is accessible, yet you feel removed.

We had heard so much hype about The Watermark’s rooftop pool, so we checked it out immediately upon checking in – and it delivered! What a vibe the pool is! We had some lunch and took a dip before getting out around the island.

Rent a golf cart on Ambergris Caye. The Watermark made it simple for us by arranging it, it was dropped off and picked up from our hotel. Just a note, our golf cart wasn’t filled with gas when we got it (this seems typical on Ambergris Caye) – so be sure to check right away and fill it up!

During our stay, we ventured up north to discover the “secret beach” – kind of a funny play on the name of a beach that isn’t so secret. Along the way we discovered so many restaurants and shops that we added to our bucket list for next trip! We enjoyed dinner at the coolest little place called The Truck Stop which boasts sunset views, an outdoor movie screen, yard games, a couple of bars, live music and several shipping container restaurants.

A Dreamy Romantic Caribbean Getaway To Belize

Our getaway as a couple to Belize’s enchanting gems – Placencia, Caye Caulker, and Ambergris Caye – was nothing short of magical, and the perfect little getaway from the US. The tropical beauty, friendly locals, and diverse experiences creates the perfect backdrop for a dreamy Caribbean vacation. As we bid farewell to Belize, we carried with us memories that would forever bind us to this tropical paradise – and added so many spots to our bucket list for next time.

For any couple seeking a dreamy escape to the Caribbean, Belize’s charms await – a destination where love blossoms, and relaxation thrives amidst the splendor of the tropics.
